‘Days of Our Lives’ star Patrick Muldoon’s cause of death revealed as heart attack

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Actor Patrick Muldoon’s cause of death has been officially confirmed, with his death certificate outlining the medical reasons behind his sudden passing on Sunday, April 19, at the age of 57.

He was reportedly found unconscious at his home and was pronounced dead after emergency responders arrived. Muldoon was widely recognized as a familiar face in 1990s television and films, leaving behind a career that spanned decades in entertainment.

Patrick Muldoon cause of death revealed in medical report

According to his death certificate reviewed by People, the ‘Days of Our Lives’ and ‘Melrose Place’ actor died from a myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack. The document also listed pulmonary embolism and hereditary coagulopathy as underlying causes.

The latter is a genetic condition that affects the body’s ability to form blood clots, while a pulmonary embolism occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery in the lungs, according to the Mayo Clinic. The death certificate also noted that Muldoon’s remains were cremated on Tuesday, April 28.

Two days before his passing, the actor shared an Instagram post expressing excitement about his new crime thriller ‘Kockroach,’ starring Chris Hemsworth and Taron Egerton, on which he was credited as an executive producer.

Known as “Bobo” among his loved ones, Muldoon grew up in San Pedro and later graduated from USC, where he played for the Trojans football team, before shifting to acting while still in college after appearing in two episodes of ‘Who’s the Boss?’

Following his 1991 graduation, he secured a three-episode recurring role on ‘Saved by the Bell’ as Jeffrey Hunter, Kelly’s (Tiffani Thiessen) brief love interest, and went on to achieve wider recognition as Austin Reed on ‘Days of Our Lives’ from 1992 to 1995, returning again from 2011 to 2012; during his time away from the show, he also portrayed Richard Hart on ‘Melrose Place’ from Seasons 3 to 5.

Patrick Muldoon remembered as co-stars and longtime friends pay tribute

Following news of his passing, several former co-stars paid tribute to Muldoon on social media, including ‘Days of Our Lives’ actors Alison Sweeney and Lisa Rinna, the latter of whom, who played his on-screen sister Billie Reed, shared a photo of the pair on her Instagram Stories accompanied by a broken-heart emoji.

Sweeney, who played Samantha “Sami” Brady on the soap since 1993, reflected on the “heartbreaking news” in a post shared on X. She said, “Pat was a rare kind of person—brilliantly talented, endlessly kind, and generous in spirit, I was so lucky to have worked with him when I first started at ‘Days of Our Lives,’ he made me feel at ease right away.”

She added, “He brought his unique charm and humor to work every day. A truly gifted guy, and one who will be profoundly missed."

Actress Denise Richards also paid tribute to Muldoon in a heartfelt social media post, reflecting on their 36-year relationship and describing him as her “best friend” and “family,” while expressing that she was “deeply heartbroken and devastated” and found it difficult to put her grief into words.

She further stated, “You were my best friend and my family. We met in our first acting class, I was 19 never had an acting job and you were 21 a student at USC doing a recurring role on ‘Who’s the Boss?’ And here we are. 36 years later.”

Richards continued, “My whole adult life & I don’t know it without you. The friendship, love, support, respect & loyalty we had was unconditional and rare. You lit up every room you walked into. You are larger than life & everyone was drawn to you."
