NEW YORK CITY: The New York City Police Department (NYPD) finds itself in the eye of a storm in a city reportedly grappling with a surge in crime.

The department's decision to promote its dance team amidst rising concerns over migrant-involved crime has sparked a heated debate among the city's residents.

NYPD dance team under fire

The NYPD dance team, which made its debut on local television station PIX11 last Thursday, was formed in 2022 to promote mental and physical wellness through dance.

Their Instagram profile bio reads, "Staying mentally and physically well through DANCE!"

However, the timing of their performance has raised eyebrows, with critics questioning the department’s priorities in a time of crisis.

Having showcased their talent at numerous city functions and educational institutions, as evidenced by images on their Instagram account, the NYPD dance team has not been immune to criticism.

Their recent performance has drawn flak from both the public and political figures alike, who argue that it reflects a misalignment of the department's priorities.

"Instead of stopping crime, watch us do the Macarena instead!" Brooklyn Libertarian Party secretary Christopher Skelly remarked on X.

Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, added, "how many school music programs got defunded for this."

The NYPD dance team, amidst criticism, defended its practices on social media, emphasizing the importance of stress relief.

This defense comes in the wake of several migrant-related crimes in NYC, including a citywide migrant robbery ring linked to a recent raid on a migrant residence by NYPD.

A disturbing video surfaced showing two individuals from the same ring assaulting a 62-year-old woman.

In a separate incident, ICE officials arrested two migrant gang members suspected of attacking NYPD officers.

Amidst these events, an NYPD spokesperson clarified that the dance team members buy their own uniforms and do not practice while on duty, per TND.

Numerous social media users have voiced diverse criticisms towards the NYPD dance team.

A user on Facebook said, "Reminds me of the nurses dancing during the covid crisis."

Another person remarked, "So their plan is to dance the crime away? Genious; let me know how that works out."

One person noted, "Unbelievable. I can't decide if this is a joke or is it maybe a middle school talent show..... "

"I sure hope they patrol better then their dancing? If thats it!?!" claimed another.

Another user joked, "Omg, I can’t unsee this."

A user defended saying, "Everyone needs something to do on their off hours. Let them calm down a little and also keep in shape. No one works 24 hours a day."

"What they do on their off time is their business." said another.
