STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK: A New York man has been accused of strangling his 82-year-old mother to death in her Annadale home last week, New York Post reports. Carl Sutera, 59, of Sheldon Avenue in Huguenot, was arrested on Tuesday, January 23, a day after the funeral of his mother, Rosalie Sutera.

She was found lying on the floor of her home on Wolcott Avenue in Arden Heights on January 17, the outlet reported. 

When did Carl Sutera kill his mother?

The woman was pronounced dead on arrival by EMS and the medical examiner was tasked with determining her cause of death while the police investigation continued, sources said. The criminal complaint alleges that the defendant fatally strangled the 82-year-old at some point between 9.58 am and 1.30 pm on January 17 inside her home. 



 

What charges does Carl Sutera face?

Carl Sutera was charged with one count of murder in the second degree but has pleaded not guilty. The defendant, who stands about 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weighs about 245 pounds, was arraigned on Wednesday and remanded to Rikers Island. He is due back in Criminal Court on Monday, according to public records.

Rosalie Sutera was a great grandmother

Rosalie Sutera, born in Brooklyn, was a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, according to her obituary. Her husband, also named Carl, died in 2022. A funeral was scheduled for Monday at Holy Child R.C. Church in Eltingville from John Vincent Scalia Funeral Home with burial at Resurrection Cemetery in Pleasant Plains, according to her obituary.

Attorney Joseph Sorrentino, who is representing Carl Sutera, said that the matter is under investigation and at this time he is not making any statements.

Meaww previously reported that Maher Kassem, the individual responsible for the murder of his wife and three daughters, provided the police with the reported motive behind the killings.

Notably, he spared his teen son to watch him murdering his money-hungry wife, Majeda, and daughter, Zahia, Halema, and Hanan in the basement of their home on Sunday, January 21, in Tinley Park . 

After the tragic killing of his family members, Maher has been charged with three counts of murder. In the course of the investigation, he also provided an account of the sequence of events that transpired during the argument over money at the crime scene.

As reported by Daily Mail, Maher Kassed revealed that he recently retired after dedicating his entire life to providing a better home for his family. He expressed feelings of being unappreciated by his wife Majeda and daughters Halema, Zahia, and Hanan.

Voicing concerns about financial matters, Maher complained to the police, stating, "45 years... I worked 45 years, and she treated me like a f******g dog." The family is believed to have owned a liquor store in the neighborhood.
