Carlos Alonso: Florida man who didn't stop after fatally hitting Ella Adler with boat yet to be charged
MIAMI, FLORIDA: The boater suspected of fatally hitting a teenage ballerina who had fallen in Florida's Biscayne Bay while wakeboarding was identified by authorities on Wednesday, May 15.
According to a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission incident report, Carlos Guillermo Alonso, 78, allegedly struck 15-year-old Ella Riley Adler with his 42-foot-long Boston Whaler on Saturday, May 11, afternoon in the Miami-Dade County Bay and did not stop.
Alonso was seen on 7News cameras on Wednesday night as he made his way back to his Coral Gables residence. He refused to offer an explanation over the incident.
Ella Riller was struck while waterskiing
Adler fell into the water near Mashta Point while wakeboarding behind a boat with friends after she lost her grip on the tow rope.
Alonso of Coral Gables is said to have struck the teenager while she was next to the boat, waterskiing with her friends while he was heading west. According to the report, witnesses stated that he did not stop or slow down.
The Miami Beach high school student was discovered floating with "a lot of blood" accumulating in the water around her, according to first responders.
Adler succumbed to her injuries even though her friends on the wakeboarding boat were able to retrieve her from the water and call for help.
Ella Adler's father expressed his grief over her sudden death
In an emotional letter read aloud at the dancer's packed funeral on Monday, May 13, her grieving father Matthew Adler wrote, "You were taken from us way too soon, and the world has been robbed of all the things you could have achieved," as reported by New York Post.
The letter further read, “But you will always be here with us and your friends and family will carry your energy and spirit forever.”
Having performed with the Miami City Ballet in over 100 shows, Adler was recognized as a gifted dancer. Before she died, she was scheduled to appear in the school's production of "Chicago."
Carlos Alonso is yet to be charged
Alonso is helping with the investigation, according to officials, and his boat has been taken to a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission facility so that detectives can look through it for evidence.
While the investigation is still ongoing, the septuagenarian has not been charged.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Ella Adler during this incredibly difficult time,” a statement from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission read.
Witnesses who have any information or video of the collision are asked to contact the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).
