MARIN COUNTY, FLORIDA: On November 6, 2020, Chad Paul Anciaux, 36, fatally assaulted Jennifer Powell outside the Stage Stop Inn using a baseball bat.
The crucial question before the jurors in the Marion County, Florida courtroom was whether the act constituted first or second-degree murder.
They concluded that he committed the more severe offense. Chad was sentenced to life in prison, as announced on Wednesday by the Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office.
It's important to note that Florida law prohibits parole for first-degree murder convictions. Prosecutors opted not to seek the death penalty.
What did Chad Paul Anciaux do?
According to the initial arrest report for Anciaux, the entire incident was captured on the motel's video surveillance.
The footage revealed Powell fleeing from their room with Anciaux in pursuit, wielding a metal baseball bat while the victim screamed for help, “Help, he’s going to kill me.”
Anciaux was seen knocking Powell to the ground with a blow to the back of her head, followed by multiple strikes to her face and head area with the bat.
At one point, a woman attempted to intervene, but Anciaux chased her away.
He then returned to where Powell lay unconscious, rolled her onto her back, adjusted her head to face up, and continued the assault with the bat at least 10 more times.
The report notes that Anciaux halted the attack and fled when two additional witnesses intervened.
Upon the arrival of Marion County deputies, Powell was found lying on a sidewalk outside one of the rooms with a pool of blood around her head.
She was transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center in critical condition and succumbed to her injuries on November 16.
During the search for Anciaux, a Marion County deputy patrolling the area located him walking less than a half-mile away on Northeast 49th Avenue.
When the deputy tried to detain Anciaux for questioning by grabbing his arm, Anciaux retaliated by grabbing the deputy's other arm and striking him while attempting to shove him away.
Anciaux then tried to flee but was tased and subsequently taken into custody as per Law&Crime.

Chad Paul Anciaux's fate
The Marion County, Florida courtroom concluded that Anciaux committed the more severe offense, leading to a life sentence in prison.
Defense attorney Candace Hawthorne maintained that her client committed second-degree murder, not first-degree, arguing that Anciaux, in a "blind rage," acted as part of a "depraved mind."
Notably, the autopsy revealed multiple skull fractures, and Anciaux had inflicted severe injuries, knocking out several teeth, with one found in the back of the victim's throat.
After only two days of testimony, the jury on Wednesday found Anciaux guilty of first-degree murder.
He was promptly sentenced to life in prison. Anciaux was also convicted and received an additional five-year prison term for resisting an officer with violence, with credit given for more than three years already served as per WFTV.
