LONDON, UK: A conversation that began with a joke about conservative activist Charlie Kirk quickly turned into a train wreck on live television Thursday, May 14 after a debate on Piers Morgan Uncensored spiraled from comedy criticism into a personal war of words.

What started as a discussion over whether Pete Davidson had gone too far at a celebrity roast soon became an ego clash, with accusations of failure, hypocrisy, and one insult that instantly took over social media.

A Charlie Kirk punchline lights the fuse

The segment opened with Morgan asking his guests about Davidson’s now-viral joke during Netflix's The Roast of Kevin Hart, where the comic made a graphic jab involving Charlie Kirk while roasting Tony Hinchcliffe.

The joke had already divided audiences online. Some saw it as classic roast comedy- aggressive, uncomfortable, and designed to shock.

Others viewed it as another example of comedians leaning on controversy instead of craft.

Morgan turned first to Sosnick, who didn’t hold back.

Drawing on his own background in stand-up and his years around comedy clubs, Sosnick argued that the issue wasn’t whether the joke was offensive, it was whether it was actually funny.

“There’s no censorship issue here,” he said. “The audience decides. And in my opinion, if that’s your best material, the market eventually tells you.”

He went on to suggest Davidson had become famous more because of celebrity culture than genuine comedic brilliance. That was enough to trigger Smith.

Smith, visibly irritated, immediately pushed back and defended Davidson as one of the few mainstream comics still willing to take risks.

Morgan briefly tried to keep the discussion focused on comedy, noting that Davidson himself has often been the target of deeply personal jokes including jokes about his father, who died in the September 11 attacks and has usually taken them in stride.

Shouting match erupts as Morgan pacifies panel

Sosnick doubled down, insisting the joke simply wasn’t funny and saying edgy material doesn’t automatically equal good writing.

Smith then shifted from defending Davidson to attacking Sosnick directly.

“You had your shot in stand-up,” Smith snapped. “Pete became one of the biggest names in comedy. That should tell you something.”

Sosnick refused to back down, saying his experience booking performers gave him every right to judge what succeeds with audiences.

The two began speaking over one another, with Morgan repeatedly trying to regain control.

“You both started this conversation brilliantly,” Morgan said, half-laughing, half-frustrated as the volume rose.

As Morgan attempted to move on and bring another guest into the discussion, Smith jumped back in saying  “Adam, you really are one of the dumbest people who makes a living talking.”

For a brief moment, the panel froze. Then everyone started talking at once.

Clips of the exchange spread within minutes, with viewers split over who won the confrontation.

Supporters of Smith praised him for calling out what they saw as fake outrage over roast comedy.

Others sided with Sosnick, arguing that being offensive doesn’t automatically make a joke clever.
