PROVO, UTAH: An emotional moment took center stage in court Friday, July 10, as an enhanced surveillance video tied to the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk was played, leaving his family visibly shaken.

As the footage rolled, relatives including Erika Kirk and Charlie's mother Kathy Kirk broke down in tears, overshadowing earlier arguments from Tyler Robinson’s defense team, which had spent the week questioning whether DNA evidence on the alleged weapon could truly link him to the crime.

Charlie's Kirk's family gets emotional

Prosecutors shifted the focus to visual evidence after wrapping up forensic testimony, unveiling an enhanced surveillance video capturing the moments around Charlie Kirk’s fatal shooting.

The edited footage, which zoomed into earlier recordings, appeared to show a figure moving across a campus rooftop, lying in a prone position and then fleeing shortly after the gunfire.

The video triggered a strong emotional reaction in the courtroom.

Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, and his mother, Kathy Kirk, were seen consoling each other as it played, while other family members and supporters also appeared visibly distressed.

Kathy Kirk was later seen leaning into her husband, Robert Kirk, holding a tissue to her face as she sought comfort.

Nearby, Erika Kirk’s sister, Tonya, placed a reassuring hand on her back in support.

As emotions continued to run high, an investigator seated with the family brought over a trash can to collect the growing number of used tissues.

In contrast, Tyler Robinson showed little reaction during the presentation.

Reports indicate his screen remained off, and he largely avoided looking at the footage, keeping his gaze lowered or fixed ahead.

Defense questions DNA analysis

Friday's proceedings centered largely on testimony from Caitlin Oliver, a DNA analyst with the ATF, who examined genetic material recovered from the rifle investigators allege was used in Kirk's killing.

Oliver testified that testing found evidentiary support indicating Robinson could be a possible contributor to DNA collected from several parts of the firearm.

However, under questioning from defense attorney Michael Burt, she acknowledged that DNA analysis cannot identify with absolute certainty who handled a weapon or establish when the DNA was deposited.

Burt also highlighted that some of the biological samples had degraded and that several swabs contained DNA from more than one individual.

The defense further pointed out that Robinson's father was identified as a possible contributor to DNA found on the rifle's bolt.

Oliver clarified that DNA samples from Robinson's parents and his roommate had been collected as exclusion samples during the investigation and that Robinson's father is not considered a suspect in the case.

Kirk family releases statement

In a statement issued following the conclusion of the preliminary hearing, the Kirk family described the proceedings as a significant step in their pursuit of justice for Charlie.

They expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and support, acknowledging the emotional toll of the past few days.

The family said it brought them some comfort that the evidence presented had been seen publicly, while emphasizing that nothing can undo their loss.

As the case moves forward, they added, they hope the truth continues to emerge through a fair and transparent legal process grounded in facts.
