Charlie Kirk’s mother pushes back on family rift rumors with Erika: ‘We’ve grown closer’
WASHINGTON, DC: Charlie Kirk’s mother, Kathryn Kirk, has broken her silence on speculation about a family rift with his widow, Erika Kirk, saying the two women have actually grown closer since his death.
In a rare interview with Vanity Fair, Kathryn rejected claims that Charlie’s parents blame Erika or are fighting with her over his will and Turning Point USA’s future.
“We were 100% behind her,” Kathryn said, making clear where she and her family stand on Erika.

Kathryn, who has largely avoided speaking to journalists, said she wants to remain a private citizen. But her silence has fueled speculation about her relationship with Erika and the wider Kirk family.
She pushed back on those claims, saying the loss of Charlie had brought her closer to his widow.
“Erika and I have, through the trauma, grown closer,” Kathryn said. “We knew Charlie in a way that no one else did. We can look at each other’s eyes, and we know the depth of our despair.”
According to Vanity Fair’s account, Kathryn became emotional while discussing the way Erika has been treated online. She said Charlie would be upset by what has been said about his wife.
Kathryn also recalled how quickly the media reached out to the family after the shooting. A TMZ reporter, she said, “called me even before I talked to my daughter. Before I was running the car.”
Charlie Kirk had planned for Erika Kirk’s future role
The Vanity Fair profile also detailed preparations Charlie and Erika had been making for their family’s future before his death.
Doug DeGroote, a Turning Point board member who handled the couple’s personal finances, said they had been working on their will and planned to visit his office to sign the paperwork the Monday after Charlie was killed.
According to the profile, Charlie had also discussed security recommendations with Erika and their pastor the night before his death, including bulletproof glass shields and vests.
Turning Point board members, Erika and several close allies, told Vanity Fair that Charlie had made clear he wanted his wife to succeed him if anything happened to him.
Kathryn said her son had kept his parents out of those discussions because “it would just go right into our fears.”
A former Turning Point employee also told the outlet, “She knew him more than anyone,” referring to Erika and her selection to lead the organization.
Erika Kirk recalls moments surrounding Charlie’s death
Erika has also spoken about the emotional aftermath of Charlie’s shooting.
During a September preliminary hearing, she recalled watching surveillance footage of the shooting and silently pleading with the man on the screen. “Don’t do it. Don’t you dare do it. It’s not too late,” she recalled.
As the video showed Robinson taking position for the shot, Erika gripped Kathryn’s arm and cried out.
She also recalled insisting on seeing Charlie’s body at the Utah hospital despite being advised against it.
“I looked back at him and said, ‘With all due respect, I want to see what they did to my husband. I didn’t get a kiss goodbye this morning. I just want to kiss my husband,’” Erika told Vanity Fair.
Hospital staff removed tubes from Charlie’s mouth, wrapped his neck and cleaned away blood before Erika saw him.
“I’ll never be able to put it into words,” Erika said. “But Charlie had a smirk. It wasn’t sad.”
