Christine Pelosi launches California State Senate bid, rules out run for mother Nancy’s House seat
SACRAMENTO, SAN FRANCISCO: Christine Pelosi, daughter of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, announced on Monday, November 10, that she will run for a California State Senate seat, quelling speculation that she might seek to succeed her mother in the House of Representatives.
"I'm running to represent you, San Francisco, in Sacramento," Christine Pelosi said in an announcement video posted on social media.
"Fighting for consumer rights, women's rights, gun violence survivors, immigrants, and our most vulnerable communities against the threats we face," she added.

Christine Pelosi launches state Senate bid
Christine Pelosi, 59, is a Democratic strategist and attorney with deep party ties. She previously chaired the California Democratic Party’s Women’s Caucus for a decade and currently serves on the Democratic National Committee’s executive committee.
She also worked as special counsel in the Clinton administration. Her decision sets up a race for the seat currently held by State Sen Scott Wiener, who last month announced his own campaign for Nancy Pelosi’s House seat.
“What do we do when our freedoms are under attack? We speak up, we fight back, and we organize,” Christine Pelosi added in her campaign message.
Announcement comes after mother Nancy Pelosi's farewell
The announcement came just days after Nancy Pelosi, 85, confirmed she would not seek re-election in 2026, ending a four-decade career that shaped American politics and made her the first and only woman to serve as Speaker of the House.
“I have truly loved serving as your voice in Congress,” Pelosi said in a farewell video, recalling her long tenure representing San Francisco since 1987.
“That is why I want you, my fellow San Franciscans, to be the first to know, I will not be seeking re-election to Congress,” she stated.
Reflecting on her legacy, Pelosi added, “We have made history. We have made progress. We have always led the way, and now we must continue to do so by remaining full participants in our democracy.”
Pelosi led House Democrats for 20 years, from 2002 to 2022, serving as a crucial ally to Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and as a fierce opponent of Republican Presidents George W Bush and Donald Trump.
Crowded field to replace Nancy Pelosi in Congress
Nancy Pelosi’s decision has set off a fierce contest for her deep-blue San Francisco seat, which has reportedly not seen a competitive race in nearly 40 years.
Even before Pelosi’s retirement announcement, the Democratic primary for her San Francisco-based district was eyed by others.
Saikat Chakrabarti, a former aide to Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, entered the race earlier this year, while state Sen Scott Wiener launched his campaign in October.
Christine Pelosi’s move to seek a state office instead of joining that race clarifies the field and signals that her political ambitions, at least for now, are rooted in Sacramento.
