WASHINGTON, DC: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) called Republican lawmakers "b******s" on the Thursday, March 13 episode of MSNBC's 'All In with Chris Hayes', and promptly apologized for the remark on live television.

According to The Hill, 74-year-old Schumer has been having a rough week, as he faced pushback from progressive members of his own party for siding with Republicans to pass a continuing resolution (CR) to avoid a government shutdown at midnight on March 14.

Why did Chuck Schumer support the GOP spending bill?

Democrats have criticized the GOP-led stopgap spending proposal for increasing defense spending while cutting non-defense programs. Chuck Schumer initially opposed the measure as well, calling for a "clean April 11 CR" that would keep the government open through the next month and provide Congress time to negotiate bipartisan legislation.

However, Republicans, with their slight majority in both chambers, passed it through the House before adjourning for the week. This left the Senate with two options: either vote for the plan or let the government shut down. While Republicans enjoy a 53-47 majority, most legislation, including the CR, needs 60 votes to pass the Senate and overcome a filibuster.

Faced with the tough choice, Schumer capitulated to the Republican demand and announced on Thursday night that he would be voting to advance their spending proposal. This earned the lawmaker widespread criticism from his progressive colleagues and approval from President Donald Trump.

Taking to Truth Social, the POTUS expressed, "Congratulations to Chuck Schumer for doing the right thing — Took 'guts' and courage!"

Chuck Schumer calls Republicans 'b******s' on live television

During his appearance on MSNBC, Chuck Schumer was grilled by network anchor Chris Hayes over his decision to back the GOP-led CR.

"The only thing that gets them (Republicans) to back down is meeting conflict with conflict. If you meet conflict with essentially managed retreat or strategic non-engagement, then they roll all over you!” Hayes told Schumer, leading him to defend his decision.

"No, Chris, we are going to conflict with them on everything — on the tax cuts for the billionaires," argued Schumer. "They’ve become a plutocracy. An oligarchy. On Medicaid, we have plans to conflict them with all of that. If the shutdown occurred, we wouldn’t be able to do that because they would fill up both the Senate and the discussion on whether we should cut this and not cut that of things that they want to cut.”

The Senator used an expletive while closing his argunment, as he stated, "So to have the conflict on the best grounds we have summed up in a sentence that they’re making the middle class pay for tax cuts for billionaires, It’s much, much better not to be in the middle of a shutdown which could divert people from the number one issue we have against these b******s! – Sorry, these people."

Internet trolls Chuck Schumer for his statement

Netizens from across the political aisle slammed Chuck Schumer for first voting for CR and then criticizing GOP lawmakers on air. The following tweets demonstrate their takes.

"Looks like Chuck here is starting to show more signs of TDS," wrote a user.

"Shooting his mouth off on MSNBC like he is a tough guy then slithering away to vote YES on the spending bill. What a guy," mocked another.

"It's a great day when Chucky Schumer is upset!" quipped a third.

"Trump has broken him," shared a fourth.

"Schumer has been going against lightweights for so long and now he’s hopelessly outmatched by Trump. He’s spiraling," chided a fifth.

"Chuck Schumer is ruining Democracy by never retiring. Time to hang it up old man, your time is over," jibed yet another.
