Chuck Schumer condemns weekend shootings: ‘Sickening events have become far too normal’
WASHINGTON, DC: Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer reacted to the string of shootings over the weekend in the country and abroad.
In a statement, he said that recent episodes of gun violence point to a deeper crisis in public safety and stressed the need for stronger measures to prevent shootings and protect communities.
Chuck Schumer insists 'we must do more to stop gun violence'
Referring to the recent shooting incidents at Brown University in Rhode Island and in Sydney, Australia, Schumer, on Sunday, December 14, stated that “sickening events have become far too normal.”
“The Jewish people have been collectively demonized — increasingly so in the last few years — and this tragedy in Sydney shows the abject danger of letting antisemitic rhetoric and action go unchecked," Schumer said in a statement obtained by NewsNation.
"Our collective humanity demands that we come together, no matter our race or religion, and forcefully rebuke the forces that have led to this moment and left our society so divided,” the Democrat added. “On the heels of a tragic shooting here at home at Brown University, our hearts are extremely heavy this morning. These sickening events have become far too normal in our world."
"We must do more to stop gun violence, including congressional action on gun safety reforms. We must reject antisemitism and hate of all kinds, wherever it rears its head,” he stressed.
Brown University shooting leaves two dead, nine injured
Sen Jack Reed (D-RI), on Sunday, said the fatal Brown shooting “shook” the Ocean State.
In the shooting incident that happened on Saturday at the Ivy League school, two students were killed, and nine were wounded, according to the officials.
According to the Providence Police Department Chief Oscar Perez, a person of interest has been detained.
The shooting occurred inside the university’s Barus and Holley engineering and physics building, prompting a campus lockdown and an overnight manhunt.
Victims were transported to area hospitals, where Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said they are receiving "excellent medical care."

On Sunday in Australia, a mass shooting happened during a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach.
During a press conference on Monday, officials said “that 16 people have been confirmed as being killed, including 15 innocent people and one perpetrator.”
“There are 42 people in New South Wales hospitals overnight, and the victims’ age ranges are from as young as 10 to 87, a devastating fact,” New South Wales Premier Chris Minns said.
