WASHINGTON, DC: Chuck Schumer is facing a sharp drop in popularity among citizens. A recent Gallup survey shows Schumer has the lowest approval rating.
The poll, released on Tuesday, December 23, surveyed 13 top politicians, with Schumer placing last. His support has declined significantly, and some Democrats have called for his resignation. Schumer received a 55 per cent disapproval rating, marking his lowest approval rating in 21 years.
He was unable to secure an agreement between Donald Trump and Republican leaders to end the longest government shutdown.
Chuck Schumer’s popularity hits record low amid party frustration, poll shows
Schumer now ranks at the bottom among political leaders, mainly because of low support from his own party. According to the latest Gallup survey reported by the New York Post, only 39 per cent of Democrats approved of his job performance.
“Schumer’s rating among his own party has worsened markedly. Two years ago, 76% of Democrats approved of his job and 20% disapproved, but now 39% approve and 56% disapprove,” Gallup said in its analysis.
Voters' responses last month also highlighted Schumer’s declining popularity, showing his lowest approval rating in 21 years. “After enduring the longest federal government shutdown in US history amid persistent affordability concerns, Americans are closing out the year with a bleak view of the country, its leaders and the economy,” Gallup said.
“Americans have consistently been more pessimistic than optimistic about the economy’s direction in recent years, but the current figures represent a deterioration from earlier this year. In May, 58% thought the economy was getting worse, and 37% thought it was improving,” Gallup added.
Chuck Schumer and Trump administration clash during longest government shutdown
During the longest government shutdown in US history, tensions rose between Schumer and Trump. Schumer said he was not interested in meeting with the president to resolve the shutdown.
This came after Trump announced on his social media platform that he no longer planned to meet with Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries. The meetings were intended to discuss government funding before the September 30 deadline.
Polls show approval ratings for leaders
Donald Trump has a 36 per cent job approval rating, with 89 per cent of Republicans supporting him and just 3 per cent of Democrats. Vice President JD Vance received 39 per cent approval overall, including 91 per cent of Republicans and 5 per cent of Democrats.
Hakeem Jeffries did better than Schumer, with 64 per cent of Democrats approve performance, which is 25 points higher than Schumer. Robert F Kennedy Jr had a 39 per cent approval rating, backed by 82 per cent of Republicans and 6 per cent of Democrats.
Mike Johnson earned 35 per cent approval, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune had 34 per cent. Jerome Powell and Secretary of State Marco Rubio scored above 40 per cent. Other leaders, including John Roberts, Scott Bessent, Pete Hegseth, and Pam Bondi, received less than 40 per cent approval.
