Cody Dewayne Helms: North Carolina man known as 'Batman' arrested for shooting friend over dispute

ROWAN COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA: Authorities from the Rowan County Sheriff's Office apprehended a 36-year-old individual known as 'Batman' earlier this week following allegations of fatally shooting his friend during a dispute, as per WCNC. 

According to reports, Rowan County deputies were dispatched to a 911 call reporting a shooting at a residence on Crystal Lane in Kannapolis at approximately 1 p.m. The caller informed officials that the suspect, identified as Cody Dewayne Helms, had already departed from the scene.

What did Cody Helms do? 

According to a press statement issued by the Rowan County Sheriff's Office, on Thursday, March 21, just before 1 p.m., law enforcement responded to a distress call originating from a residence on Crystal Lane.

The caller, a resident of the home, reported that a family member had been shot by an individual known by the moniker 'Batman.'

The suspect had fled the scene by the time the resident placed the 911 call. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim, identified as 33-year-old Jonathan Yancey, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.

Witnesses identified the suspect as 36-year-old Cody Helms, who is reported to be one of Yancey's friends. According to accounts, the two engaged in an argument moments before the fatal shooting occurred.

Police officials arrest Cody Helms 

Following the deadly shooting, a Kannapolis Police officer located Helms approximately one mile from the scene. Helms was subsequently arrested and charged with murder.

He was booked into the Rowan County Jail and is currently being held as he awaits his initial court appearance.

A similar incident unfolded when a man was accused of shooting and killing his longtime friend during an argument. The man is now charged with his lifelong friend's murder.

Raheem White, 27, of Pleasant Grove was arrested in connection with the shooting death of Byron McNeal Jr, 28 according to Centre Daily. 

Investigators said White fatally shot McNeal on March 19 after the duo got into some sort of dispute. Officers were alerted to the shooting at about 4 p.m. and arrived to find a man lying unconscious in the street.
