Conan O’Brien breaks silence on Rob and Michele Reiner's death after heated Christmas party fight
NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Conan O’Brien has finally broken his silence on the deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Reiner. The couple was found dead at their home by their daughter, Romy, on December 14, 2025.
The shocking news came after the Reiners attended O’Brien’s Christmas party, where Rob and his son, Nick Reiner, had a loud argument.
Conan O' Brien reflects on Rob Reiner and Michele Singer's deaths
In an interview with The New Yorker published on February 20, Conan O'Brien spoke about Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, 70.
O’Brien described how his relationship with the couple deepened over time. “I knew Rob and Michele, and then increasingly got closer and closer to them, and I was seeing them a lot. My wife and I were seeing them a lot, and they were so — they were just such lovely people.”
He described the shock he felt after their death, “And to have that experience of saying goodnight to somebody and having them leave and then find out the next day that they’re gone.… I think I was in shock for quite a while afterward. I mean, there’s no other word for it. It’s just very — it’s so awful. It’s just so awful.”
O’Brien also reflected on Reiner’s public voice and engagement. “And I think about how Rob felt about things that are happening in the country, how involved he was, how much he put himself out there — and to have that voice go quiet in an instant is still hard for me to comprehend,” he said.
Looking back on Reiner’s legacy, O’Brien noted, “These people are so larger than life, especially if you’ve grown up watching them or appreciating their work. I mean, I just keep mulling over … the body of work, I think it’s seven movies that Rob Reiner made, in quick succession, that are classics.”
He added, “Now, if you can make one great movie, that’s impressive. It’s an almost impossible feat. To make two means that you’re one of the greats. To make seven — in, like, a nine-year, 10-year, 11-year period — is insanity. With ‘Spinal Tap’ alone, if that’d been the only thing he ever did, he influenced my generation enormously.”
Nick Reiner, son of Rob Reiner and Michele Singer, remains in custody
At the time of the high-profile couple’s deaths, authorities revealed that the incident followed an argument with their son, Nick, at Conan O'Brien’s holiday party the night before.
Nick, 32, was later arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, including a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. He faces a possible sentence of life in prison without parole or the death penalty.
Reports indicated that Nick had been taking medication for diagnosed schizophrenia, though the medication allegedly left him feeling “out of his head.” He also has a documented history of d**g addiction.
Nick had been scheduled for arraignment last month, but his attorney, high-profile criminal defense lawyer Alan Jackson, withdrew from the case shortly before the January 7 court hearing.
Speaking about his decision during a January appearance on the 'Hot Mic' podcast with Billy Bush, Jackson declined to explain why he stepped away.
“That’s a confidential communication between a lot of folks that I’m not willing to disclose,” he said. When Bush asked whether the issue involved money, Jackson replied, “You can’t say that something happened with the retainer because I’ve never said that."
“Obviously, something happened with my ability, and my team’s ability, to continue the representation, but I don’t want you, your audience or anybody else to start speculating as to what that might be,” he added. “I have not said a word about it.” Jackson concluded, “Once I’m done, I’m done. I’ve withdrawn.”
