FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA: The loved ones and family of an elderly couple married for almost 60 years are questioning their mysterious death after the couple was gunned down in their Fort Lauderdale home about two weeks ago, per Miami Herald.

Fort Lauderdale police have reported that Major Melvin, aged 89, and Claudette Melvin, aged 87, were tragically killed inside their residence on March 22.

The perpetrator or perpetrators are thought to have fled the scene, taking the couple's 2014 Ford Fusion, which is now missing.

Family questions the death of Melvin couple 

The authorities are appealing to the public for assistance in locating the missing car in which the suspect or suspects are believed to have fled. Described as a red, four-door midsize vehicle, it bears the Florida license plate LTDQ16.

"We’re looking at several leads right now,” stated Fort Lauderdale Police Sgt Donald Geiger, noting, “It’s very distinct that it has side damage on the left driver’s side, rear door, and we also have some damage on the right rear bumper.”

Speaking to NBC Miami, Kim Melvin Hill, the 11th child of the couple, expressed her thoughts on why her parents might have been targeted, saying, "I'm so numb I can’t feel. Yes, we are angry, we are very angry. We are still trying to wrap our minds around how can we? Who would? Who did? Why? So we ask those questions."

Tonya Mitchell, another daughter of the couple, shared about her parents, stating, "They were the most loving people that I’ve ever known. Both caring. And whoever this perpetrator is, he just needs to be found."

According to Mitchell, the suspect or suspects left behind her mother’s purse and other valuables. The couple, who had been married for 60 years, left behind a legacy of 28 grandchildren, as reported by the AP.

At the time of writing, no arrests had been made as police continued their investigation.
