OWASSO, OKLAHOMA: 16-year-old Dagny Benedict, a non-binary student from Owasso High School in suburban Tulsa, tragically lost their life earlier this month after a brutal assault in a school bathroom.
Reports indicate that Dagny, also known by the name 'Nex', and another student were severely beaten by three older female students on February 7, according to 2 News.
Dagny Benedict faced prolonged bullied by classmates
The altercation, which involved a prolonged physical confrontation, was finally halted by a school staffer. Dagny sustained severe injuries alongside a classmate during the assault.
Despite the gravity of the situation, it was reported that school staff failed to intervene promptly, and the victims were left to endure the attack without immediate medical assistance.
While initial reports and the family's obituary referred to Dagny using female pronouns, their mother, Sue Benedict, clarified that her daughter identified as non-binary and preferred the name 'Nex'. The grieving parent revealed that the other victim involved in the assault was also non-binary.
Mother suspects severe brain trauma from assault led to demise
According to Benedict, Dagny had been a target of bullying at school, and the bathroom altercation resulted in a fall that led to a head injury. The assault left the victim with visible bruising and cuts across their face.
"I didn’t know how bad it had gotten," lamented Benedict, highlighting the severity of the injuries sustained by her child during the assault. Following the attack, Dagny's relatives rushed them to the hospital after school. Although the teen was released the same day, they were readmitted on February 8 and, tragically, passed away.
Local police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding Dagny's death. While the cause of death is yet to be determined, the mother of the other victim speculates that "complications from brain trauma, head trauma, is what caused it."
As the community grapples with this heartbreaking loss, it remains unclear if charges will be filed against Dagny's attackers. The teen's mother remembered their child as "tough, but a great kid" during the funeral service.
