COLUMBUS, OHIO: The 33-year-old Ohio man is found guilty for the murder of the mother of a 2-month-old child, with whom he had previously ended a romantic relationship.
Following the deadly shooting on February 22, 2022, the newborn was left alone with the deceased mother for an hour until police arrived at the scene.
During the trial, a Franklin County jury found the accused, Dallas Lowery, guilty on multiple charges including murder, felony murder, domestic violence, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and tampering with evidence in the killing of Heather Chapman.
Police found Heather Chapman dead in her house
According Law&Crime, on February 22, 2022, at approximately 9:15 pm, an Ohio Division of Police patrol officer responded to a shooting report at a residence located in the 1700 block of Melrose Avenue.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered an adult female, later identified as Chapman, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel from the Columbus Fire Department were dispatched to the scene, and Chapman was pronounced dead at around 9:22 pm.
Police noted 'suspicious circumstances' at the crime scene and transferred the case to homicide detectives for investigation.
Authorities later revealed that Lowery had contacted the police, claiming that Chapman had shot herself, although no firearm was found at the residence.
Investigators discovered romantic break up between Dallas Lowery and Heather Chapman
During the initial interviews, Lowery declined to cooperate with the police regarding Chapman's death.
However, he later asserted that he was the sole individual present at the residence, apart from the 2-month-old child, when Chapman allegedly shot herself.
Following several weeks of investigation, authorities identified Lowery as the primary suspect in Chapman's death, given their recent romantic breakup.
According to The Columbus Dispatch, Chapman had recently ended her relationship with Lowery when he visited her home on the night of February 22 to collect some belongings but purportedly ended up fatally shooting her instead.
Subsequently, Lowery departed the residence, leaving the newborn daughter alone with Chapman's body, and handed the murder weapon to an acquaintance named Terry Parrish before returning to his hotel room to shower and change clothes.
Lowery later revisited Chapman's residence and contacted the police. The murder weapon was subsequently discovered in Parrish's vehicle.
Parrish entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors, admitting to one count of tampering with evidence and agreeing to testify against Lowery during the trial.
According to reports from The Dispatch, Parrish informed jurors that a day before Chapman's death, Lowery had contacted him multiple times, stating his intention to shoot her in the face. "He's a man of his word. He shot her in the face," remarked Franklin County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Dan Meyer.
Lowery is presently scheduled to attend his sentencing hearing on April 25.
