‘Dangerous, Unnecessary and Idiotic’ Senator Kaine blasts Iran strikes, pushes war powers vote
WASHINGTON, DC: Senator Tim Kaine on Saturday, February 28, sharply criticized the recent joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran, calling the operation “dangerous, unnecessary, and idiotic” and urging lawmakers to return to Washington immediately.
The Virginia Democrat, who has consistently advocated for limits on presidential military authority, stated that the Senate must vote on his War Powers Resolution to prevent further hostilities without congressional approval.
His remarks position him at the center of the Democratic response as debate escalates over the scope of executive war powers.
Lawmakers questioned both the legal justification and strategic implications of the operation, calling for an immediate return to Washington to vote on measures on Presidential authority to engage in armed conflict.

Kaine described the strikes as a major miscalculation with potentially grave consequences. “These strikes are a colossal mistake, and I pray they do not cost our sons and daughters in uniform and at embassies throughout the region their lives,” he said in a statement.

The senator has repeatedly introduced measures aimed at curbing a president’s ability to initiate military action without authorization from Congress.
On Saturday, he renewed that effort, calling on colleagues to reconvene without delay.
“The Senate should immediately return to session and vote on my War Powers Resolution to block the use of US forces in hostilities against Iran. Every single Senator needs to go on the record about this dangerous, unnecessary, and idiotic action,” Kaine added.
He previously advanced similar legislation following last month’s military operation in Venezuela, arguing that Congress must reclaim its constitutional role in decisions of war and peace.
Other Democrats raise legal and constitutional concerns
Kaine’s position was echoed by fellow Democrats, including Andy Kim, who also called for lawmakers to return to Washington.
“Right now, I have zero confidence in this president who has so flagrantly violated our Constitution. That is why we should have Congress immediately go back into session for the War Powers vote to reassert the American people’s will, which, again, they don’t want to be at war,” Kim told CNN.
He continued: “I’m ready to go right back to the Senate today. I think we should be having Congress immediately in session to review this.”
Meanwhile, Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said the strikes raise “serious legal and constitutional concerns.” “The Constitution is clear: the decision to take this nation to war rests with Congress, and launching large-scale military operations – particularly in the absence of an imminent threat to the United States, raises serious legal and constitutional concerns,” Warner said in a statement.

“Congress must be fully briefed, and the administration must come forward with a clear legal justification, a defined end state, and a plan that avoids dragging the United States into yet another costly and unnecessary war,” Warner added.
