John Thune hails President Trump's Iran strikes, seeks full congressional briefing
WASHINGTON, DC: Senate GOP leader John Thune on Saturday, February 28, commended President Donald Trump for authorizing joint US-Israeli military strikes on Iran, describing the move as necessary to counter escalating threats.
The Senate Majority Leader said that Tehran had declined diplomatic alternatives offered by the administration prior to the operation.
His remarks come as lawmakers weigh the scope and justification of the strikes. Thune added that he expects a full briefing for all senators in the coming days.
John Thune cites rejected diplomacy and security concerns
In a statement posted on X, Thune said that Iran’s actions over several years had created what he called an unacceptable risk to American personnel and allies in the region.
“For years, Iran’s relentless nuclear ambitions, its expanded ballistic missile inventory, and its unwavering support for...groups in the region have posed a clear and unacceptable threat to US servicemembers, citizens in the region, and many of our allies," he wrote.
"Despite the dogged efforts of the president and his administration, the Iranian regime has refused the diplomatic off-ramps that would peacefully resolve these national security concerns. I commend President Trump for taking action to thwart these threats,” Thune continued.
Thune also thanked Secretary of State Marco Rubio for keeping him informed throughout the week.
“I thank Secretary Rubio for providing updates on these issues throughout the week, and I look forward to administration officials briefing all senators about these military operations,” Thune added.
According to reports, Rubio notified at least some members of the “Gang of Eight” in advance of the strikes, including Thune.
However, multiple sources familiar with the matter said those briefed were not given a full accounting of the legal justification.
Lawmakers says US is entering 'war of choice'
Some Democrats voiced strong concerns about the decision to conduct the strikes.
Jim Himes, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said the United States was entering a “war of choice.”

Himes added, “Everything I have heard from the administration before and after these strikes on Iran confirms this is a war of choice with no strategic endgame.”
He said that he had raised concerns directly with Rubio, warning that military engagement in the region “almost never ends well for the United States.” He said, “It does not appear that Donald Trump has learned the lessons of history.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson defended the administration’s actions in a separate statement, saying Iran was now “facing the severe consequences of its evil actions.”
“President Trump and the Administration have made every effort to pursue peaceful and diplomatic solutions in response to the Iranian regime’s sustained nuclear ambitions,” Johnson wrote on X.
He added that he would remain in close contact with the administration as the operation proceeded.
