DELAWARE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA: Daniel Klein, a 51-year-old resident of Upper Chichester Township, Pennsylvania, has been apprehended following the shocking discovery of his elderly mother in distressing conditions.
The woman was found covered in dried feces, infested with maggots, and reportedly "fused" to a soiled sheet. Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer expressed his dismay, calling it "one of the worst cases" he has encountered during his tenure.
Klein faces charges of abusing a dependent person and reckless endangerment after authorities were alerted to the dire situation during a wellness check at his residence. “And for this person, the defendant Klein, to do this to his own mother, it’s just… I can’t even imagine," WPVI reported.
Insights into Daniel Klein's alleged abuse of his mother
The disturbing episode unfolded on Sunday afternoon, April 7, when concerned neighbors raised the alarm, noting the absence of both Klein and his mother for several months. Upon arriving at the suspect's home, police “detected a foul odor" and signs of neglect, prompting them to force entry, according to a press release.
Inside, officers discovered Klein's mother “unconscious” yet breathing with her body seemingly "fused" to the bed sheets. Paramedics called to the scene removed the blanket from the elderly woman and found “her lower half to be covered in dried feces and maggots,” Authorities observed that her feet exhibited what officials referred to as "ram's horn toenails."
Investigation reveals possible prolonged confinement of elderly mother
Klein, who claimed to be the sole caregiver for his mother, remains in custody at the George Hill Correctional Facility after failing to meet bail requirements. Investigations suggest the woman may have been confined to her squalid bed for an extended period.
As the victim receives critical care at Crozer Chester Medical Center, authorities continue to piece together the full extent of the abuse. Klein is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on April 25.
