The Broomfield Police Department reported that on December 14, 2023, officers responded to a welfare check request made by Daniel Krug for an individual at a residence in the 3100 block of Promontory Loop, Broomfield, Colorado, approximately 20 miles north of Denver.

The call was placed just before 1 pm. Upon arrival, first responders discovered an adult female victim, later identified as Kristil Krug, in the house's garage.

She exhibited signs of blunt force trauma injuries and a stab wound. Emergency medical personnel transported her to a local hospital, but tragically, Kristil Krug succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.

Investigators noted no signs of a struggle or forced entry, and Kristil Krug's concealed-carry sidearm remained on her, suggesting she was either ambushed or acquainted with her attacker.

Subsequently, on December 16, police announced the arrest of Daniel Krug, charging him with his wife's murder. Authorities believe that in the months leading up to Kristil Krug's murder, Daniel Krug had impersonated her former boyfriend, sending threatening text messages and emails with the intention of framing the other man for the crime.

Kristil Krug and her ex-boyfriend were in a relationship for approximately a year before parting ways in 2000.

She informed investigators that he had sporadically contacted her with crude messages and sexual propositions since their breakup, but nothing had caused significant concern.

However, on October 31, 2023, Kristil Krug reportedly filed a police report, alleging that the ex-boyfriend — now suspected to be Daniel Krug — had escalated his offensive behavior. The messages included requests for a hook up, disturbing suggestions for self-harm, and an email offering to harm Daniel Krug, accompanied by a photo of Daniel in his workplace parking lot.

Between November 1 and December 14, Daniel Krug allegedly assumed the identity of the ex-boyfriend, sending an additional eight messages to his wife. One message accurately pointed out that her vehicle registration had expired, while another mentioned her visit to the dentist on November 9.

A November 13 message hinted at a plan to eliminate Daniel Krug and be together. The message reads, "“U belong with me. I'll get rid of him and then we can be together…they let me park and walk right into his (place of work)…Give me the signal and he wont come home.”

Suspicion grew when detectives discovered that the home's doorbell camera had been taped over, and three of the four security cameras were turned off on the day of Kristil Krug's death. Notably, Daniel has not reported any explanation about why the cameras were turned off.

However, the most undeniable evidence emerged when investigators traced the IP address used for the messages and emails to the public Wi-Fi at Daniel Krug's workplace. Authorities also learned that the ex-boyfriend was in Utah at the time of Kristil Krug's death.

Additionally, Kristil Krug's mother reportedly informed authorities that her daughter intended to divorce her husband, citing instances of rough treatment towards the children. Kristil had allegedly planned to use photographic evidence of the children's injuries to pursue full custody.

The GoFundMe initiative established to support the couple's children amassed over $43,600. Additionally, a family member initiated a GiveSendGo page to aid Daniel Krug in securing funds for his legal defense, contending his innocence.

The page asserts that an unidentified malevolent individual, still at large, stalked and murdered Kristil Krug. It claims that authorities hastily attributed the crime to Daniel Krug in their pursuit of a quick resolution.
