NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations, Danny Danon praised President Donald Trump for his actions following US-Israeli strikes on Iran on Friday, February 28.

The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting after the joint strikes on Iran, where Iran’s envoy condemned the attacks as unlawful, and conflicting claims emerged about the fate of Iran’s supreme leader.

Addressing the Council, Danon thanked Trump and acknowledged what he described as close cooperation between Israel and the United States, saying it has brought the alliance between the two countries to “an all-time high in peace and in war.”

He accused the Iranian regime of building nuclear weapons in "blatant disregard of international law and UN resolutions."

Danon also said the regime has brutally suppressed its own citizens and crushed dissent, adding that such actions were occurring “now as we speak in cities in Iran.”

He further charged that Iran has expanded its missile arsenals and armed proxies across the region, and has "openly declared its intention to erase Israel from the map."

Danon said that “Iran faces consequences” for its actions and that the regime is launching missiles and drones across the region, endangering neighboring countries, including the United Arab Emirates, where the death of a Pakistani citizen was reported.

Iran denounces strikes as 'war crime'

Trump stated that Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei had died in the massive US and Israeli attack and said operations would continue with "heavy bombing throughout the week." Iran, however, claimed its leaders were “safe and sound.”

Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir-Saeid Iravani, decried the joint US-Israeli strikes as a “war crime” that he said was anathema to the UN founding charter.

He stated that the baseless allegations used to defend what he called an unlawful use of force have no standing under international law. “The invocation of preemptive attack, claims of imminent threats, or other unsubstantiated political claims, cannot legitimize aggression,” Iravani said in his remarks.

Shortly after the initial launch of the attacks, Trump posted a pre-recorded address to the nation in which he described the operation as one “to prevent this very wicked, radical dictatorship from threatening America and our core national security interests.”

Iravani concluded by asserting that Iran would “continue to exercise its inherent right of self defense.”
