DANVILLE, VIRGINIA: The Averett University community is reeling from the tragic loss of one of its own, as news emerged that David Hanbury, a respected psychology professor, was found dead in Orlando just one day after disappearing during a conference.

Hanbury, who served as an associate professor of psychology and chair for the Division of Physical and Psychological Health Sciences at Averett University, was attending the Southeastern Psychological Association Conference near Universal Studios when he was reported missing on Friday evening, March 15. 

Police do not suspect foul play in David Hanbury's death

Concern escalated quickly, leading local authorities to respond to a call about an "unattended death" at Club Orlando, not far from the conference venue, the following day.

"Upon arrival, staff took officers to where the deceased was located," stated the Orlando police, confirming Hanbury's identity as the deceased.

While authorities have refrained from disclosing an exact cause or location of Hanbury's death, they have assured that foul play is not suspected. The Orlando Police Department awaits the coroner’s report from the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office for further insights.

Hanbury, who had been a valued member of the Averett University faculty since 2015, was deeply involved in the academic community. His sudden passing has left colleagues, students, and friends in shock and mourning.

In a heartfelt statement, Tiffany Franks, president of Averett University, expressed the community's profound sorrow over the loss of Dr Hanbury. "It is with a heavy heart that we share the heartbreaking update of the passing of Dr David Hanbury," Franks said.

"On behalf of the entire Averett community, we send our condolences and prayers of support to Dr Hanbury's family, friends, and all others upon whom he had a lasting impact," per Fox.

The circumstances surrounding Hanbury's death remain shrouded in mystery, leaving both the university and the wider community mourning the loss of a beloved educator and colleague.
