WASHINGTON, DC: Former Democratic Governor of New York, David Paterson said if the US President had the power, he would have urged Joe Biden to consider pardoning Donald Trump for his hush money conviction, according to the New York Post.

Notably, speaking on Sunday, June 2, on WABC radio's 'The Cats Roundtable', Paterson echoed Trump's accusations that the case was "rigged".

After being convicted in the hush money trial, Trump had told mediapersons outside the courtroom that the trial was "rigged".

David Paterson blasts prosecution of Donald Trump

Paterson said, "There are a lot … of erroneous qualities to that trial. Some of the people who are involved: A person who worked at the White House somehow wound up in the Manhattan DA’s Office."

He added, "All of it, when it adds up, really looks very much like what the former president describes it as."

According to Paterson, even though the president of the United States is not allowed to pardon someone for state crimes, like the felony raps concerning manipulating company documents to conceal hush payments for which Trump was found guilty in Manhattan court last week, the commander-in-chief ought to have given it some thought in this particular situation.

Paterson made a reference about former president Gerald Ford pardoning ex-president Richard Nixon in the Watergate scandal in 1974. He said, "Sometimes when you’re a leader and you’re willing to put yourself at the center of acrimony and controversy, both sides may come down on you."

He added, "But years later, upon reflection, I’m sure they’ll respect you."

Besides his conviction in the hush money trial, Trump also faces federal charges related to discovery of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago and his role in the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021. If found guilty on both counts, Trump would be eligible for a pardon.

George Pataki sides with David Paterson on his statement

Along with Paterson, former Republican Governor of New York, George Pataki decried the prosecution of Trump, stating that it would backfire on Biden and other Democrats.

In the future, conservative prosecutors may charge Biden or other Democrats in retaliation for the historic conviction of an ex-president, according to Pataki.

He said, "When Biden is out of office, what is to prevent the district attorney of some rural county in Texas prosecuting him for millions of dollars for damage done by illegal aliens because he didn’t uphold his oath of office on the border?"

He added, "They have opened a can of worms here that can go anywhere."

Although Pataki expressed concern about the conviction's potential long-term effects on the legal system, he also stated that it will likely hurt Trump's chances of winning the presidency in the near future. He said that those in America who haven't paid much attention to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's successful prosecution will only notice that Trump is a convicted criminal.

He said, "If you’re an undecided voter who … doesn’t understand Bragg’s partisan and ideological history; or the judge’s [Juan Merchan] partisan and ideological history … it’s going to have an impact on this election, which is unfair."

Internet reacts to David Paterson's remarks on Donald Trump's conviction

Several social media users slammed Paterson as he blasted the "rigged" prosecution of Trump.

A user stated, "Lol he was a worse Gov than Pataki, if that is possible."

Another mentioned, "Juan Merchan was a Paterson appointee for the NYC court of claims in 2008. Now he's being thrown to the wolves."

A user said, "A corrupt former governor defending a corrupt and now convicted felon Donald Trump. Not a surprise."

One user said, "It was not biased at all. Bragg was slow to start on it to begin with if you recall. All the rest of what tRump has done convinced him that it had to be done, and his other witnesses all legitimized what Cohen was going to say."

A comment read, "The disgraced twice impeached convicted criminal will go to jail. Packer's testimony irrevocably affirmed the criminal conspiracy to commit election fraud."
