GOLF MANOR, OHIO: Charges have been brought against the parents of a four-year-old child who overdosed on fentanyl on his birthday.

Denard Bishop, 39, and Alexis Scarborough, 34, are charged with endangering the welfare of a child after their son was discovered on November 25, gasping for air while taking a nap at his father's Golf Manor home.

After the incident, he was taken to the Cincinnati Children's Medical Center by ambulance.

Alexis Scarborough entered not guilty plea

'Agonal breathing' was observed in the boy, according to court records that Fox19 Now was able to obtain. When someone does not get enough oxygen, they can develop a potentially fatal condition.

Bishop was out of custody for two days before his mother was taken into custody. Eventually, both were found and placed under arrest. Scarborough entered a not guilty plea to child endangerment on Wednesday.

Her attorneys asked the judge to free her on her own recognizance so she could continue working as a hotel housekeeper, but the judge denied their request. Her $10,000 bond was set, and she was told not to speak to her kids unless authorized by them.

'Hopefully, this child will be okay': Chief Tom Synan

Bishop's initial court appearance is scheduled for this Friday. Chief Tom Synan, co-chair of the Hamilton County Addiction Response Coalition, according to Daily Mail, "fortunately, hopefully, this child will be okay."

"Luckily, they got medical attention. It is something that in some cases you can reverse. And hopefully, there's no further impact and the child and everyone in this incident learns from it and is able to take those safeguards and get the help and the resources they need so that they're not using drugs anymore."

The latest data from the Ohio Department of Health indicates that 4,915 people died from accidental drug overdoses in 2022. Eighty-one percent of these involved fentanyl, frequently in combination with other substances.
