Deputy US Marshal killed while serving arrest warrant in Louisiana, suspect taken into custody

ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA: A Deputy US Marshal was fatally shot while helping execute an arrest warrant in Louisiana, triggering a major investigation involving the FBI, Louisiana State Police, and local law enforcement agencies.

The shooting unfolded on Monday, July 13, when members of the US Marshals Violent Offender Task Force and local sheriff’s detectives were attempting to arrest a wanted fugitive in Alexandria.

Authorities later confirmed that the federal officer died during the operation.



Deputy US Marshal shot and killed during fugitive operation in Alexandria

According to the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, law enforcement officers were conducting an operation around 3 pm on Monday to apprehend a wanted fugitive when gunfire erupted.

An unidentified Deputy US Marshal assigned to the Western District of Louisiana was shot during the incident and later died from the injuries, the US Marshals Service confirmed.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the slain officer.

Details about how the shooting unfolded remain limited, and investigators have not disclosed exactly what led to the exchange that turned deadly.

The death of the federal officer has sent shockwaves through the law enforcement community as multiple agencies work to piece together what happened.

Suspect taken into custody after lengthy standoff

Following the shooting, authorities said the suspect remained at the scene, leading to what officials described as a "lengthy standoff."

The individual eventually surrendered and was taken into custody. Officials said the suspect sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Investigators have not disclosed the nature of those injuries or whether officers returned fire during the encounter.

Law enforcement officials also have not publicly identified the suspect or released additional details regarding the fugitive operation that led officers to the location.

What is known is that the arrest effort quickly escalated into a deadly confrontation that resulted in the loss of a federal officer.

FBI says there is no ongoing threat to the public

The investigation is now being led by the FBI, with assistance from Louisiana State Police and local authorities.



In a statement provided to KALB, the FBI New Orleans Field Office confirmed its involvement in the case.

“The FBI responded to an incident this afternoon in Alexandria with the Alexandria Police Department, Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Office, and Louisiana State Police,” the agency said.

The bureau added that it is now leading the investigation into what it described as an assault on a federal officer.

“The FBI is now leading the investigation into an assault on a federal officer. Louisiana State Police is also investigating potential violations of state law. The subject, now under investigation, was taken into custody, and there is no ongoing threat to the public,” the statement added.
