NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: The countdown to 2026 came wrapped in sequins, soul, and undeniable star power as Diana Ross lit up Times Square on Dec. 31.

At 81, the music icon proved that age has nothing to do with presence. With millions watching around the world, Ross delivered a performance filled with elegance, energy, and the unmistakable magic that has defined her career for more than six decades.

There was truly “ain’t no mountain high enough” for Diana Ross as she headlined Dick Clark’s 'New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest,' moments before the ball dropped in Times Square.

The legendary performer stepped onto the stage draped in a dramatic crimson, feathered floor-length coat layered over a sleek gown. Surrounded by bundled-up revelers, Ross moved through the crowd with confidence and grace, commanding attention the moment she appeared.

At 81, she didn’t just show up, she owned the moment. Her presence set the tone for the final minutes of 2025, blending nostalgia with joy in a way few artists ever manage.

Ross opened her set backed by tuxedo-clad dancers, launching into crowd favorites “The Boss” and “Upside Down.” Her vocals remained strong and expressive, drawing cheers as she moved seamlessly through choreography and crowd interaction.

She later transitioned to a raised platform overlooking Times Square for her signature anthem, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” As confetti filled the air and phones lit up the night, Ross paused to take in the moment.

“I’m so grateful for all the blessings in my life!” she said, drawing thunderous applause just seconds before the new year arrived.

She closed her six-minute performance with “Take Me Higher,” ending the night on an emotional high as 2026 officially began.

Star-studded lineup joins Diana Ross on New Year’s Eve

Ross led a stacked lineup that also featured Mariah Carey, New Kids on the Block, Pitbull, Post Malone, Chappell Roan, Busta Rhymes, Maren Morris, Rick Springfield, and Huntr/X from KPop 'Demon Hunters.'

Ryan Seacrest anchored ABC’s broadcast from Times Square alongside Rita Ora, while Chance the Rapper hosted the inaugural NYRE Central countdown in Chicago. Rob Gronkowski and Julianne Hough appeared from Las Vegas, and Roselyn Sánchez delivered festive moments from Puerto Rico. The full broadcast will be available to stream on Hulu beginning Jan. 1.

Seven decades of hits still shaping pop culture

Ross’ performance highlighted the extraordinary longevity of her career. She first topped the charts in 1964 with The Supremes’ “Where Did Our Love Go?” and went on to earn 11 No. 1 hits with the group.

Her solo success followed soon after, with “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” reaching No. 1 in 1970, three years after Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell popularized the song.

Her influence remains strong today. Ross’ 1980 hit “Upside Down” was recently featured in the opening episode of Netflix’s Stranger Things, introducing her music to a new generation.

Diana Ross continues to tour the world in 2026

Ross remains a global touring force. Throughout 2025, she performed across major international stages, including London’s O2 Arena, Switzerland’s Montreux Jazz Festival, and two celebrated nights at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles.
