WASHINGTON, DC: Donald Trump smiled and winked at photographers as he attended the Ground Zero 9/11 memorial service. Shortly before the initial pause was observed to commemorate American Airlines Flight 11 hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center, the former president smiled and repeatedly mouthed the words "thank you" to the assembly.

The Republican presidential contender, flanked by JD Vance and former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, seemed upbeat following a contentious debate with Kamala Harris, as his fans could be heard chanting, "We love you, Trump," and "We need you."

Donald Trump's questionable claims regarding 9/11

Donald Trump has received criticism in the past for his actions surrounding 9/11. The former president misrepresented to reporters that his building, 40 Wall Street, which was next to the Twin Towers, "actually was the second-tallest building in downtown Manhattan," just hours after the terrorist attack of 2001.

“It was actually, before the World Trade Center, was the tallest—and then, when they built the World Trade Center, it became known as the second-tallest. And now it’s the tallest,” he said during a local television phone interview, per The Daily Beast.

In addition, the Republican nominee for president had declared that he would "be involved in some form in helping to reconstruct" and had hired "a couple of hundred" personnel to help rescue operations. However, investigators have not discovered proof of Trump's claims.

Furthermore, there is no evidence to support his insistence on being at the forefront of the cleanup operations around Ground Zero.

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris shook hands at ceremony

Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, just hours after their first in-person meeting at the presidential debate, on September 10, shook hands before the solemn commemorative ceremonies after Harris turned toward Trump and both extended a hand. There seemed to be no interaction between Vance and Harris.

Harris and President Joe Biden next made their way to Shanksville, Pennsylvania, to take part in the Flight 93 memorial's wreath-laying ceremony. Biden and the small group he was with bent their heads during the ceremony, and Biden put his hand on the wreath to pay his respects to the 40 people killed in the crash. In 2001, a volunteer fire station in Shanksville that acted as a major hub for family reunions was visited by the president and vice president.

Biden and Harris saw a cross formed of the plane's leftover parts on display. Biden made the sign of the cross before entering to speak with a few of the families impacted by that day. Biden appeared to be demonstrating bipartisanship when he momentarily put on a Trump hat inside the fire station.

According to a White House spokesman, the president was discussing how the nation came together in the wake of the attacks and how that unity needed to be restored. As a sign, he presented a hat to a man donning a Trump cap, and in turn, the man gave Biden his hat to wear for a short while, according to the spokesperson.

Internet furious to see Donald Trump smile at the photographers during the Ground Zero 9/11 memorial service

The former president received harsh criticism from netizens for his lack of feeling and regard for the victims during the Ground Zero 9/11 memorial service.

One X user tweeted, "Completely inappropriate. This is not who America wants to represent us on the world stage." Another added, "Just another photo opportunity for the conman."

"And thanking people? What? He’s so disrespectful! This isn’t about him," remarked one while someone else wrote, "It’s like he thinks they are there for him. There was a shot of everyone looking sullen and Trump sighing and looking around like he was bored."

"He has no respect for the dead. He showed us last week at Arlington and again today at Ground Zero," commented one.
