NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump promised to fire SEC Chairman Gary Gensler on his first day if reelected to the White House, while speaking at the Bitcoin conference on Saturday, July 27.

The former president also stated that under his leadership, the federal government would not sell any of its bitcoin holdings, reported Axios, and effectively create the core of a "strategic national bitcoin stockpile."

According to the publication, the promises were intended to build on the controversial businessman's growing base of support from this part of the tech world, as his rival, presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris has been riding a high wave since joining the race last week.

Donald Trump's speech at Bitcoin Conference

In a clip of Trump's speech at Bitcoin 2024 that went viral over the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), he is seen saying, "The moment I am sworn in as President, the persecution stops and the weaponization ends against your industry. And as long as I am in the Oval Office, Elizabeth Warren... and her goons... will keep their hands off Bitcoin... We're going to let it grow."

"On day one, I will fire Gary Gensler and appoint a new SEC chairman," he announces, as the crowd erupts.

"I didn't know he was that unpopular," observes Trump as cheering continues. "Well... let me say it again. On day one, I will fire Gary Gensler. I will appoint a new SEC Chairman who believes America should build the future, not block the future, which is what they are doing."

Gensler has been leading the SEC since being nominated by Joe Biden in 2021 and would have more than a year left in his term as commissioner if Trump is to come to power. The SEC is widely considered hostile to the crypto industry because of its history of regulating by enforcement, and resistance to creating rules specific to digital assets.

Axios reported Trump saying on Saturday, "If I am elected, it will be the policy of my administration to keep 100% of all the bitcoin the US government currently holds or acquires. For too long, our government has violated the cardinal rule that every bitcoiner knows by heart, never sell your bitcoin."

Internet cheers at Donald Trump's announcement

Netizens were highly appreciative of the former president following his speech at the Bitcoin conference. The promises he made have resulted in many holding high hopes for the first day of his presidency, and the following tweets reacting to the viral clip demonstrate the prevalent mood on X.

"President Trump just won over a lot of independents with his speech at the Bitcoin conference," wrote a user.

"Trump is casting a line and reeling them all in. Beautiful," stated another.

"Day one of Trump's presidency is going to be (fire)" posted a third.

"Trump knows crypto is good and necessary to make America great again," commented a fourth.

"The best CLEAN UP is going to happen under the Trump administration!" exclaimed a fifth user.

"Trump messaging to the Independents, Libertarians and undecideds by going here is spot on and a solid strategy," observed another.

"Trust Trump to bring back our economy," shared a seventh.
