WASHINGTON, DC: Melania Trump’s outfit for her husband Donald Trump’s second inauguration has garnered mixed reactions, particularly her large statement hat.

The first lady chose a navy wide-brimmed hat designed by Eric Javits for her husband’s big day and even he could not stop himself from making a joke about it, as per Reuters.

Taking the stage for a second time in Emancipation Hall at the Capitol Visitor Center following his swearing-in ceremony, the 78-year-old made a lighthearted comment about his wife's hat, and lashed out at former GOP Reps Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger by calling them "crying lunatics."

Donald Trump jokes Melania Trump 'almost blew away' while seeing off the Bidens

While addressing the crowd, the 47th president shared that while he and his wife were saying goodbye to former President Joe Biden and former First Lady Jill Biden, Melania Trump struggled to keep her hat on due to strong winds.

"The wind is blowing like crazy. And with the hat that she's wearing, she almost blew away," said Trump, before adding, "We almost lost her. She was being elevated off the ground, she almost blew away now. So we all appreciated this. You've been a great first lady," as per The New York Post.

Melania Trump had chosen a sky blue cashmere dress and gloves by Ralph Lauren for Donald Trump's 2017 inauguration.

But this time she went for an independent New York-based designer — Adam Lippes, who designed a navy silk wool double-breasted coat for her that was squeezed at the waist.

Along with the coat came a silk wool pencil skirt and an ivory silk crepe blouse — both of them were hand-sewn by Lippes’ team, as reported by CNN. The former model styled her dress with a pair of stiletto heels.

In a statement, Lippes shared, "The tradition of the presidential inauguration embodies the beauty of American democracy and today we had the honor to dress our first lady, Mrs Melania Trump."

"Mrs Trump’s outfit was created by some of America’s finest craftsmen and I take great pride in showing such work to the world," he noted.

Meanwhile, New York-based milliner Javits, who has been in the headwear industry for four decades, felt Melania transformed his piece.

"In my hands, it looks like a very sort of understated, humble hat. And, you know, when she put it on, and you saw it with the ensemble and all that, her presence transformed it and made it something very powerful," he shared.
