AUGUSTA, MAINE: In the pursuit of his White House aspirations, Donald Trump faces a myriad of obstacles, with his latest impediment emerging from the state of Maine.

Following the Colorado Supreme Court's December 19 decision to remove Trump from the primary ballot, the Maine secretary of state, Shenna Bellows, on Thursday, December 28, announced her decision to disqualify the former President from appearing in the state's primary ballot due to his alleged involvement in the January 6 Capitol insurrection reported CBS News.

"The US Constitution does not tolerate an assault on the foundations of our government, and Section 336 requires me to act in response," Bellows, a Democrat, wrote in her statement. With the landmark ruling, she became the first election official to decide on Trump's eligibility unilaterally.

The decision came after a group of Maine's former lawmakers demanded Trump's disqualification, citing Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution that prevents anyone engaged in insurrection from holding the office.

Amid the latest roadblock from Maine, the latest reports say Trump is back on Colorado's ballot. According to CBS News, on December 28, the Colorado Republican Party appealed against the state's supreme court ruling of Trump's ineligibility to be President.

The frontrunner for the GOP 2024 presidential nomination will be a candidate for the state's March 2024 primary ballot unless the SCOTUS refuses to hear the case or uphold the state SC's ruling.

Donald Trump can appeal to a state superior court

Bellows has suspended the ruling, giving the leading GOP presidential candidate to appeal to the Superior Court.

"Given the compressed timeframe, the novel constitutional questions involved, the importance of this case, and impending ballot preparation deadlines, I will suspend the effect of my decision until the Superior Court rules on any appeal, or the time to appeal has expired," the state secretary added.

Maine's decision can be appealed to the court within five days.

Lashing out against the new trouble as an "attempted theft of an election and the disenfranchisement of the American voter," Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung, in a statement, said, "We will quickly file a legal objection in state court to prevent this atrocious decision in Maine from taking effect."

Recently, another Republican candidate, Chris Christie, was also kept off the state's primary ballot by a Superior Court judge. Maine's Republican primary is scheduled to be held in March. 5, 2024.
