WASHINGTON, DC: In a recent interview, Donald Trump recounted the distressing moment when wife Melania Trump witnessed the attempt on his life on live television. Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt by 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks on July 13 during a rally in Pennsylvania.

Fox News host Laura Ingraham questioned Trump about how his wife Melania handled the stressful day at home.

"She was watching," he remarked.  "She was watching live. It was all over the place. It was on television."

Donald Trump claims Melania Trump 'still can't talk' about rally shooting

Donald Trump said wife Melania Trump finds it difficult to discuss that horrific day with him, which he interprets as an indication of her deep care for him.

He said, "She can't even really talk about it. That's okay, that means she likes me -- she loves me. She could talk about it freely, I'm not so sure which is better. She either likes or loves me, that's nice."

Trump said when Melania saw him on the ground surrounded by Secret Service agents after the shooting, she thought "the worst had happened", Daily Mail reported.

Trump maintained his sympathy for the Secret Service agents despite their failure to fully protect him.

He said, "I just want to say one thing about Secret Service... they were very brave. They were coming. Bullets were flying over me. I went down and they were they were on top of me, I had a lot of very big, strong people on top of me."

The former president repeatedly affirmed his understanding of the errors made on that significant day.

He stated, "Should've been somebody on the roof, should've been communication with the local police and we're seeing this guy, who was a very disturbed person... how about the Trump fans who were screaming about him?"

Donald Trump to soon give 'victim statement' to FBI

Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle stepped down following the assassination attempt. Donald Trump commended the Secret Service counter-sniper for effectively neutralizing the shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks but said "it should've happened nine seconds earlier".

He also mentioned that on Thursday, August 2, he will be giving a "victim statement" to the FBI.

In a group chat of people who were tasked with Trump's protection during the fateful rally, they were aware of shooter Crooks' presence over 90 minutes before the shooting, contrary to the FBI's earlier claim of an hour.

Questions about why an agent was not stationed on the roof where Crooks fired at the former president, and why Trump was permitted to take the stage even after a threat was identified, had begun to mount for Cheatle.

Internet sympathizes with Melania Trump

As soon as Donald Trump's statement regarding Melania Trump's feelings about the assassination attempt went viral on social media, it sparked a wide array of reactions from users.

A user wrote showing sympathy, "I bet it was very scary for her, not knowing if her husband was going to stand back up or not again."

Another user asked, "Who wouldn't be traumatized after seeing their spouse almost ass*ssinated on live TV???"

The third commentator wrote, "I can’t imagine what she went through. I was watching live as well and know what gun shots are and knew instantly that there were numerous shots fired and he went down. My heart sank. Don Jr. said Barron had a tough time."

"No wonder she does not want Barron involved. She must be petrified after everything they put her family through," one said.

A person said, "I can’t even imagine! I bet the moment she saw him raise his fist, she felt immense relief!!"

Other chimed in, "Of course she was traumatized."

Some users even found humor in Trump's remark, "That means she likes me."

An X user wrote with laughing emojis, "Why does he have to say “that means she likes me” They’re married. Lol"

"“That means she likes me” What a G," one wrote.
