MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Even as Donald Trump entered the first day of opening arguments and witness testimonies in his criminal hush money trial on Monday, April 22, his family did not attend it.

Trump, as per reporters from the courtroom, remained alone and sometimes motionless at the defense table. The absence of his family during the trial this past week has left the internet in splits.

Melania Trump's presence could have an impact on jurors at Donald Trump's hush money trial

The historic day of the Manhattan Trial saw Donald Trump flanked by lawyers, court officers, Secret Service members, and political advisors, but no member of his family was present in the courtroom.

The opening statement from defense and the prosecutors saw Trump getting more uncomfortable as the first witness, David Pecker, took the stand to testify.

According to Business Insider, Melania Trump and the former president's children have not attended the trial this past week. The publication, citing legal experts, stated that the presence of his children, especially his wife Melania, "could have a strong positive impact on jurors."

Neither Melania and her children nor Trump's any other family members showed up in the courtroom during his trial. However, reports, on the other hand, said the courtroom was packed by the public and media.

Donald Trump was asked about Melania Trump's whereabouts by the reporters

When asked by a reporter about Melania Trump’s whereabouts on Monday morning, April 22, as he arrived at the courtroom, Trump did not respond.

He instead criticized the case against him by saying this was a 'witch hunt.'

“I’m here instead of being able to be in Pennsylvania and Georgia, and lots of other places campaigning, and it’s very unfair,” he said to reporters in the hallway of the courtroom.

Internet reacts to the absence of Donald Trump's family during his trial

The Internet has mixed reactions over Trump's family skipping his trial. Some were moderate while others heavily criticised the family for not showing up.

"Too embarrassed to show up. They know Trump is guilty," a user wrote on X. "That’s incredibly telling," wrote one more.

"Far-right American families are like that, especially rich ones. No empathy whatsoever, but on the other hand trump doesn’t deserve any empathy or compassion," wrote one X user.

"They're all working on their own escape plans. ...Eric is digging a tunnel to China," joked another.

"Why should they go to a FAKE TRIAL? criticized another X user with on more writing, "They HATE him!"
