'I believe we need significant new leadership. The old models are no longer working, and that includes the Democratic Party,' Elissa Slotkin said

WASHINGTON, DC: Senator Elissa Slotkin on Thursday, June 25, suggested it may be time for a new generation of Democratic leadership, arguing the party has yet to recover from its 2024 election defeat.

Speaking during an interview on Stephen A Smith's SiriusXM podcast, the Michigan Democrat said party leaders must adapt to a changed political landscape or "make room for others" who can. Her remarks come as Democrats continue debating how to rebuild following President Donald Trump's return to the White House.

Elissa Slotkin says Democrats need 'significant new leadership'

Slotkin said Democrats have struggled to establish a clear identity since losing the 2024 election, arguing the party's message has become too broad and unfocused.

"Democrats were soundly defeated in 2024. I was in a swing state, and I won that same year. To me, the lesson was simple. Democrats had too many priorities. They tried to make everyone happy and answer every question. When you prioritize everything, no one knows what you actually stand for," she told Smith.

She contrasted that approach with Trump's campaign strategy, saying he remained focused on a single message centered on affordability.

"Donald Trump came in with one clear message. He said, 'I'm going to make your life more affordable. I'm going to put more money in your pocket.' ... He won because he kept his message simple and focused on the issue Americans cared most about," Slotkin said.

According to Slotkin, the Democratic Party remains divided over its future more than a year after the election. "Every day there's a debate within the party about the path forward," she said. "That's why I believe we need significant new leadership. The old models are no longer working, and that includes the Democratic Party."

The 49-year-old also described Democrats as operating like a "circular firing squad," arguing that too much attention is being paid to reacting to political events rather than outlining long-term goals. "To me, that's a fundamental failure of leadership," she said.

When asked directly whether she believed House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer should be replaced, Slotkin stopped short of naming either leader but made clear that leadership should change if it cannot adapt.

"I'm saying that if people can't recognize that the game has fundamentally changed and can't adapt, then they need to make room for others who can, let others lead," she responded.

John Kennedy argues progressive Democrats are steering the party

Slotkin's comments came as Republican Senator John Kennedy also offered his own criticism of the Democratic Party during a Fox News appearance, arguing that progressive voices have gained increasing influence within its ranks.

Kennedy claimed Democratic leaders were struggling to respond to the party's ideological direction following recent primary victories by candidates backed by progressive and democratic socialist groups.

"The Bolsheviks are in charge of his party, and they're stone cold crazy," Kennedy said, invoking the historical term while criticizing what he described as the party's leftward shift.

He also repeated one of his frequently used lines about Democrats. "Democrats are living proof that evolution is a slow process," the Louisiana politician said, adding that "listening to them lowers my IQ."
