Elon Musk loses richest person title to Oracle’s Larry Ellison, Internet says ‘robots are winning’

WASHINGTON, DC: Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison has overtaken Tesla chief Elon Musk as the "world’s richest person."
Ellison’s fortune surged after Oracle’s stock skyrocketed on the back of massive AI-driven demand.
Larry Ellison’s wealth soars past Elon Musk after Oracle earnings
Ellison’s net worth jumped by $101 billion to $393 billion, surpassing Musk’s $385 billion, according to Bloomberg.
Oracle shares climbed 40% by the morning of September 10 after the company revealed surging demand for its data center capacity among AI clients. CEO Safra Catz said Oracle secured four multibillion-dollar contracts last quarter and expects more soon.
The company has also emerged as a key infrastructure provider for artificial intelligence, including a deal to deliver 4.5 gigawatts of electricity to OpenAI.
Oracle cofounder sees historic one-day wealth increase
Bloomberg described Ellison’s $101 billion leap as the “biggest one-day increase ever recorded” by its Billionaire Index. The 81-year-old is Oracle’s largest shareholder, and the stock’s rally could further strengthen his lead over Musk.
Ellison, who co-founded Oracle in 1977, owns 98% of Hawaii’s Lana’i island and helped revive the Indian Wells tennis tournament in California. He has long maintained ties to President Donald Trump, appearing at the White House for tech events and winning government contracts for Oracle, as CNN noted.

Musk first captured the crown in 2021, largely driven by his stakes in Tesla and SpaceX. He briefly lost the position to LVMH chief Bernard Arnault in 2021 and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in 2024, but reclaimed it both times.
Despite setbacks, Musk continues to receive strong backing, including a potential Tesla pay package worth nearly $1 trillion if certain milestones are reached.
Internet reacts to Larry Ellison overtaking Elon Musk
Online, many viewed the change as symbolic of the AI era.
“The issue isn't that Elon Musk lost his title. The issue is that his replacement is an AI tech star. This marks a turning point in the global economy: from the era of electric cars and space, we are now entering the era of artificial intelligence. It's a symbolic shift that shows where the future lies,” wrote one user on X.
