WASHINTON, DC: Just hours after former president Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at dismantling the Department of Education, his senior White House advisor, billionaire Elon Musk, took to his social media platform X to share a meme about the decision.

However, Musk’s post quickly gained attention for an unexpected reason, his apparent misspelling of “Department” as “Departmen."

Elon Musk's viral typo or was he trolling?

The meme Elon Musk shared, known as "Grant Gustin Next to Oliver Queen’s Grave", depicted a man posing with a peace sign in front of a gravestone.

In this case, the Department of Education’s logo was placed on the gravestone, and Trump’s face was crudely photoshopped onto the man.

The typo, however, became the main talking point.

Some online users speculated that Musk was intentionally trolling with the misspelling, while others mocked him for the error.

Political and sports commentator Keith Olbermann was quick to respond, writing, “You misspelled 'department,' thus proving why we need a departmenT of education and why you should have studied something other than money.”

Another user, Linda England, criticized Musk’s stance, writing, “Richest man in the whole history of the world enjoys taking food, education, and healthcare from the poorest children on the planet. He can’t pretend surprise if he doesn’t receive a lot of high praise and his businesses crash and burn.”

A user said, "It's "Department" not "Departmen." You constantly prove your absolute idiocy."

Department of Education retains federal student aid programs

Donald Trump’s executive order, signed on March 20, Thursday, fulfills a longstanding conservative goal of eliminating the Department of Education.

Flanked by children seated at school desks, he framed the move as a step toward reducing government bureaucracy.

However, the order stops short of completely dismantling the department as it still retains control over federal student loans and Pell grants.

Trump has long derided the agency as wasteful and politically biased, but dissolving it entirely would require congressional approval.

The department, established in 1979, distributes billions in federal funds to schools and colleges while managing student loans and key educational regulations.

Legal battles loom as Donald Trump moves to dismantle Department of Education

Legal challenges to the executive order were swift.

Skye Perryman, president of Democracy Forward, vowed to take action, “We will use every legal tool to ensure that the rights of students, teachers, and families are fully protected.”

Similarly, as per Irish Star, Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, signaled an impending legal battle, stating, “See you in court.”

The executive order directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to oversee a transition plan that ensures essential services continue uninterrupted.

However, without congressional action, the department’s full dissolution remains unlikely.

Past legislative attempts to abolish the department have failed to gain momentum, and with strong opposition from advocacy groups and educators, Trump’s move faces an uphill battle.
