PIERCE COUNTY, WASHINGTON: The jealous boyfriend has been sentenced to twenty years in prison for firing shots at a car while his ex-girlfriend and her new partner were inside. The couple was enjoying their first date, which included a view of Puget Sound in Washington state.

In addition to fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend's new date, he also caused severe injuries to her. Emilio Anthony Joseph John was sentenced to 23 years in prison by Pierce County Superior Court Judge Garold Johnson on Friday, March 1, according to court documents.

Emilio John pleaded guilty to second-degree murder

In response to the injuries sustained by his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend and the death of 19-year-old Alexander Shaw, John, 23, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and second-degree assault.

“It’s a mother’s worst nightmare, and that nightmare came true for me,” Cheryl Alatorre Bautista said during the sentencing hearing for her son’s killer, according to the Tacoma News Tribune.

On November 6, 2022, Shaw's family found his lifeless body in a Kia Forte in the 1900 block of Commercial Street in Steilacoom.

According to a probable cause statement obtained by Law&Crime, they had tracked his phone to the scene and discovered him suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the neck, chest, and abdomen.

It appeared that he had been deceased for several hours. Additionally, officers found a bullet hole on the passenger side, shattered glass, and multiple 9 mm and 10 mm casings.

When detectives noticed a purse in the passenger seat, they started looking for hospital gunshot victims.

They discovered that a lady had in fact been brought to Tacoma General Hospital, where medical professionals had admitted her to the intensive care unit (ICU) due to four gunshot wounds to her left shoulder and chest.

The Kia belonged to a woman. Authorities also found an Apple AirTag, which is about 40 feet away from the car and can be used to track locations. At approximately 7:30 pm and 8 pm, when the woman was dropped off at the hospital, neighbors reported hearing gunshots.

Emilio John increased his alcohol intake and aggression

John's sister reportedly asked, “Did you listen to what he had to say before you pulled the trigger?” as reported by the News Tribune. “Were you able to see the fear in his eyes before he left the Earth?”

John told a psychologist in a sentencing memorandum obtained by Law&Crime that he was impacted by the death of his great-grandmother in September 2022, who had raised him rather than his drug-addicted parents and grandmother.

Before the murder, he had increased his alcohol intake and turned "more aggressive." He began taking pills as well. During the sentencing hearing, John expressed his regret to Shaw's family.

According to the News Tribune, John stated, “I’m doing a lot of time for my actions. And I know I can’t make it right. But I’m just trying to do the best I can really.”

John was offered a plea deal by the prosecution because of his youth and lack of prior criminal history. However, Johnson stated that John's actions were not justifiable.

According to the News Tribune, Johnson remarked, “Whatever is wrong with you, however it got here, I don’t know. The bottom line is you are a threat to the community. There is no doubt in my mind that you are.”
