WASHINGTON, DC: Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy appeared alongside President Donald Trump on Marine One, a moment that drew significant attention given recent turmoil among top Republican figures.
McCarthy joined Trump on Wednesday, December 17, as they traveled to and from Dover Air Force Base in Delaware for the dignified transfer of two US soldiers killed in an attack in Syria.
Kevin McCarthy’s return and the Dover trip
McCarthy has been out of office since December 2023, following his sudden resignation after being removed as House speaker and succeeded by Mike Johnson of Louisiana.
The soldiers honored at the ceremony were Sgts William Nathaniel Howard and Edgar Brian Torres Tovar were both from Iowa, underscoring the somber purpose of the trip.
Jake Sherman, founder of the news site Punchbowl, called the moment “an interesting moment” given the recent rifts among House Republicans and internal GOP dynamics.
Sherman pointed to Trump’s significant setback in the House earlier that week, when some Republicans sided with Democrats on a healthcare vote, signaling a rebuke of GOP leadership.
In January, Punchbowl reported that McCarthy was starting a new public affairs firm in Washington alongside five associates, though he has largely stayed distant from the center of power in the capital.
Unlike other prominent former lawmakers, he has not secured high-profile board roles, but he does serve on the boards of C3 AI and Anivive Lifesciences.
Given what's going on in the House, and the leadership's interest (let's call it that) in McCarthy, an interesting moment for KM to be with Trump. https://t.co/RnIVJwueJK

West Wing controversy and Susie Wiles
Also entwined with the timing of McCarthy’s reappearance is a lengthy Vanity Fair interview that has shaken officials in the White House.
In the interview, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles is reported to have divulged inside details about the administration, including candid assessments of Trump’s personality and internal dynamics.
Some of the statements attributed to her described Trump as having an “alcoholic’s personality” and commented on Elon Musk’s use of ketamine while leading the Department of Government Efficiency. She also portrayed Vice President JD Vance as politically shrewd and conspiratorial.
This public airing of internal remarks has led to speculation that Wiles could be the first Cabinet‑level official dismissed under Trump’s second term.
Prediction markets, which had previously given her below a three percent chance of being the first major departure, now list her chances at around 16 percent.
Despite this speculation, Wiles accompanied Trump on the Dover trip, indicating she still retains at least outward support from the president amid the controversy.
Also joining Trump and McCarthy on the trip was Casey Wasserman, chair of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics organizing committee, a group McCarthy also belongs to, adding further curiosity about the composition of the entourage.
Trump publicly affirmed his support for Wiles amid the revelations, even humorously suggesting that she might be correct about his personality traits.
