NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Former Democratic Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo recently told HBO host Bill Maher that former President Donald Trump would never have faced prosecution in the state for his payments of hush money if he had not been a presidential candidate

The former governor made the remarks on Friday on HBO's 'Real Time with Bill Maher', concurring with the host that the case against Trump was overly politicized and that the New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg shouldn't have pursued it.

Andrew Cuomo says Donald Trump's prosecution looks like weaponization of justice system

Cuomo stated on live television that "the attorney general’s case in New York frankly should have never been brought," adding that people in the state who don't even like Trump are offended by it because it appears to be the weaponization of the legal system.

Cuomo claims majority of New Yorkers don't see it as a fair case He began his attack on the case by noting how many New Yorkers don't think it's a fair case, even though Trump was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records.

"The trials in New York, New Yorkers said – 66% said the justice system is politicized. And there’s nobody in New York who likes Trump," he said, per Fox News. "And still, 66% said the justice system is politicized. That’s why I think he’s not paying the same price for these verdicts because they believe it is political."

Andrew Cuomo on the real threat to democracy in the US

Cuomo, who resigned from office as governor in 2021 due to a sexual harassment scandal, stated that the real danger to democracy is the way these cases erode public confidence in the fairness of the legal system.

"And you want to talk about a threat to democracy: when you have this country believing you’re playing politics with the justice system and you’re trying to put people in jail or convict them for political reasons, then we have a real problem," he said.

Bill Maher labels Donald Trump's economic backing from supporters as 'greatest fundraising bonanza ever'

Maher continued by discussing the amount of money that Trump's supporters had given him in response to his conviction, referring to it as the "greatest fundraising bonanza ever."

He later stated, "I don't think they should've brought that one," echoing Cuomo's sentiments regarding the hush money trial. "People were going to view it as a sex case regardless of how it looked; that was inevitable."

The former attorney general of New York and the governor maintained that Trump was the target of the lawsuit because of his identity. "If his name was not Donald Trump and if he wasn’t running for president – I’m the former AG of New York – I’m telling you that case would’ve never been brought. And that’s what’s offensive to people."

"And it should be," he said, "because if there’s anything left, it’s belief in the justice system."

Internet slams Andrew Cuomo for criticizing the justice system following Donald Trump's conviction

Netizens berated Cuomo for backing the ex-president after his conviction.

One X user tweeted, "Cuomo is a sexual predator like the subject.. Why won't you support Trump.."

Another asked, "Ditto Hunter Biden. Is there a point here?"

"If it wasn't a crime then why did the jury find him guilty? So there had to be a crime," added one user.

"Cuomo is trying to resuscitate his political career. But he killed hundreds in NY nursing homes so that train has left without him. If not for that Cuomo probably replaces Biden on the ticket this time and beats Trump," opined one.

Another tweet read, "Wow even Cuomo coming to Trumps defense he’s clearly attempting to salvage the political career he once had!"
