WASHINGTON, DC: A viral post on X (formerly Twitter) claims a “double impeachment” targeting President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance is being prepared for 2026, using a simulated photo of the duo shaking hands to frame it as breaking news and spark debate.

The claim has triggered sharp reactions online; most users dismiss it as unrealistic without Democratic control of the House, while a smaller group backs the idea, highlighting deep political divisions ahead of the midterms. So, what’s actually true? Let’s fact-check the story.

Claim: A 'double impeachment' is being prepared for Trump and JD Vance

X user @OGWick0 posted, “Breaking: A ‘double impeachment’ is being prepared that could change the course of the U.S. in 2026,” and followed it with a question asking whether people support starting impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump and JD Vance.

Within hours, the post had attracted over 39k views and numerous reactions, with users sharing a wide range of opinions.

One commenter rejected the idea outright, questioning the grounds for such action, "Absolutely not! On what grounds???"

Another expressed conditional support, writing, "It would be nice but so many other things are broken that we will need a super majority to get laws passed if Drump won't sign."

Others strongly criticized the post itself, calling the claim unrealistic and driven by political sentiment rather than evidence.

One slammed the X user, saying, "What a ridiculous thought let alone valid question. Any more than perhaps you should be tried for treason or hate crime by Trump. Trump and Vance are not your enemy. Your enemy is the anger in your heart."

Fact Check: No official reports on ‘double impeachment’ of Donald Trump and JD Vance

The claim in the X post is mostly hype, not real “breaking news.” There is no official plan in Congress to carry out a “double impeachment” of Donald Trump and JD Vance as of early May 2026.

The idea is mainly coming from political speculation online, especially from people frustrated with Trump’s policies, and from talk about what could happen if Democrats win the House in the 2026 midterms.

There have been impeachment efforts against Trump alone, introduced by some Democratic lawmakers. For instance, Rep Al Green introduced a resolution in December 2025, and Rep John Larson introduced another in April 2026 with multiple charges.

However, these efforts have not moved forward because Republicans control the House, and most proposals are stuck in committee or seen as symbolic.

There has also been a separate discussion about using the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution to remove Trump, with figures like Rep Jamie Raskin suggesting action involving the cabinet, including Vice President Vance. But this is different from impeachment and is very unlikely without support from Trump’s own administration.

The term “double impeachment” itself is not an official or recognized process. It mainly appears in social media posts, videos, and political commentary, suggesting that both Trump and Vance could be impeached if political control changes.

In reality, impeachment is handled individually, and there is no current joint plan targeting both at the same time.
