Fact Check: Did Antifa sabotage the giant Ferris wheel at Freedom 250 Fair?
WASHINGTON, DC: Amid President Donald Trump’s Great American Freedom Fair on the National Mall celebrating America’s 250th birthday, a claim began circulating on social media platforms that the giant Ferris wheel at the fair had been sabotaged by Antifa, sparking concerns and speculation. Let us analyze the claim’s origins and fact-check its authenticity.
Claim: Freedom 250 Fair Ferris wheel was sabotaged by Antifa
According to a viral X post, the giant Ferris wheel at the Freedom 250 Fair "didn’t just break down, it was sabotaged."
"Mechanics confirmed someone used advanced code to completely lock out the operators once the wheel was fully loaded with riders. Forty-three innocent people were trapped in the air for almost an hour," the post claims.
It further states that the FBI has already linked the sabotage to Antifa, "who are clearly hell-bent on ruining the biggest patriotic celebration in DC history."
“They won’t succeed in ruining the greatest event in DC history,” Trump allegedly said about the incident.
The post concludes by stating that the wheel has already been fixed, security has been massively increased, and the Freedom 250 Fair is continuing stronger than ever.
Fact Check: The claim originated from a parody account
The claim, however, is false, as there are no credible reports about the Ferris wheel at the Freedom 250 Fair being damaged, after which people were trapped in the air.
A search on Google for the claim yielded no relevant results from credible news outlets, which, if true, would not go unreported.
There are also no official statements from the president or the White House condemning the alleged sabotage. The above-mentioned remark attributed to Trump is also baseless.
Additionally, the searches revealed that the claim originated from a Facebook account called America’s Last Line of Defense, which describes itself in its bio as "Nothing on this page is real." Hence, the claim originated as a parody, made for the sake of engagement.
Donald Trump opens Great American State Fair
Promising to be one of the biggest events for the US' 250th anniversary, the Great American State Fair officially opened on June 24, turning the National Mall into a large display of the country's cultures and traditions.
Trump first suggested the modern World's Fair during his 2023 campaign, and three years later, the 16-day festival has become real with a political rally led by the president.
Although the event has faced controversy, with several artists pulling out over claims of politicization, it opened with over 150 exhibits from all 50 states and US territories.
The fair also includes a giant Ferris wheel and a scaled-down version of Trump's proposed Triumphal Arch near the Washington Monument.
