Fact Check: Did Democrats really want Jill Biden to be Surgeon General like Donald Trump Jr claims?

WASHINGTON, DC: First Son Donald Trump Jr has made yet another eyebrow-raising claim about former first lady Jill Biden.
Fresh off the backlash over his take on former president Joe Biden’s prostate cancer diagnosis, Don Jr took to X (formerly Twitter) and said that Democrats wanted Dr Jill Biden to be Surgeon General back in 2020.

“I sometimes forget that part of the mental disorder of leftism is an inability to understand sarcasm. So for the confused libs out there, I'm well aware that Jill Biden is a fake doctor, not a real one...Unlike the Dems who were calling for her to be Surgeon General in 2020," Trump Jr declared.
He had sparked outrage just days before when he posted, “What I want to know is how did Dr Jill Biden miss stage five metastatic cancer or is this yet another coverup???”

Critics immediately accused him of confusing a medical doctor with someone holding a doctorate in education.

Fact Check: No, Democrats didn't want Jill Biden as Surgeon General
Donald Trump Jr's Surgeon General idea needs a sliver of context, and it revolves around talk show host Whoopi Goldberg.
During a conversation on 'The View' back in 2020, Goldberg sang Jill Biden’s praises and made a comment that’s now coming back around.
“I'm hoping Dr Jill becomes the Surgeon General, his wife, Joe Biden's wife. She would never do it, but yeah, she's a hell of a doctor. She's an amazing doctor," she said.
Her co-host, Sunny Hostin, quickly swooped in with a correction. “She's a teacher, but she might be good for (former Education Secretary) Betsy DeVos's post," Hostin said.

Outside of that flub from Goldberg, there were zero real efforts among Democrats or party insiders to get the former first lady appointed to the role of Surgeon General. The post went to Dr Vivek Murthy—a bona fide medical professional with the credentials to back it up.
Goldberg, for her part, cleaned up the comment later. “I was wrong about his wife. I was wrong, before you start texting and emailing," she quipped.
It's worth noting that Dr Jill Biden isn’t performing surgery or writing prescriptions. The “doctor” in her title comes from a doctorate in education she earned in 2007 from the University of Delaware.
According to her official White House bio, she’s been teaching for over 25 years, including during her time as second lady, a role in which she continued teaching English at Northern Virginia Community College, Newsweek reported.
Joe Biden’s grim prostate cancer diagnosis

Of course, all of this comes against the backdrop of some heartbreaking news from the Biden camp. On Sunday, Joe Biden’s office released a sobering statement confirming that the 82-year-old former president had been diagnosed with a “more aggressive” form of prostate cancer.
According to the statement, doctors had found a “small nodule” earlier this month. But the situation escalated rapidly after a follow-up on Friday, May 16, prompted by “increasing urinary symptoms."
Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support. pic.twitter.com/oSS1vGIiwU

Biden’s diagnosis came with a Gleason score of 9, which indicates a highly aggressive cancer with a strong likelihood of spreading. Tragically, the cancer has already metastasized to the bones.
A Gleason 9 score is near the very top of the 1–10 scale, and doctors say it means the cancer cells look extremely abnormal and are very likely to spread fast.

But there is a glimmer of hope. “The cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management,” the statement said. For now, Biden and his family are working with doctors to review treatment options.
