Fact Check: Did Donald Trump show children 'assassination trading card' at White House Easter Egg Roll?

WASHINGTON, DC: President Donald Trump on Monday, April 21, hosted the White House Easter Egg Roll, an annual tradition in which thousands of people gathered to roll colored eggs down the White House lawn.

Following the event, a photo showing Trump displaying an "assassination trading card" to children at the White House Easter event went viral. But is it real? Let us find out below.

Claim: Donald Trump showed children 'assassination trading card' at Easter Egg Roll

A photo allegedly from the White House Easter event spread like wildfire on social media platforms such as Reddit and X. It showed Donald Trump displaying a collectible card to a group of children with what seemed to be a picture from the assassination attempt on him in Butler in July 2024.



 

Journalist Aaron Rupar shared the picture on his X account and captioned it, "Trump shows children a card depicting the Butler assassination attempt today at the Easter Egg Roll. (Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)."

As the picture went viral, British tabloid The Daily Mirror published a story with the headline, "Trump blasted for showing assassination trading card to kids at White House event."

Fact check: True, the picture was clicked by Getty Images' Chip Somodevilla and is genuine

The picture circulating across social media is genuine and was found in Getty Images' database and clicked by Chip Somodevilla, fact-checking outlet Snopes confirmed.

The caption of the original photo on the Getty Images website read, "US President Donald Trump holds a collectors card depicting the assassination attempt during the Easter Egg Roll on the South Lawn of the White House on April 21, 2025 in Washington, DC. Interestingly, the picture on the trading card was clicked by Jabin Botsford for The Washington Post after gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks shot at Trump during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, per the fact-checking outlet. 

Moreover, the card also had text stating the date of the attempted assassination and captions that read, "Trump assassination attempt," "Fight to save America," and "Stand Strong."

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is not selling specific collectible cards through official channels, but so far, cards with the same picture and captions are available on the e-commerce platform eBay.

Donald Trump hosts White House Easter event as egg prices reach record high

Donald Trump hosted the White House Easter Egg Roll, which the White House said would use eggs "donated by American egg farmers," as egg prices in the United States reached record highs earlier in 2025 due to an outbreak of avian flu forcing farmers to kill millions of egg-laying hens, NPR reported.

Moreover, it was also the first time the White House had sponsors for the event, with YouTube, Amazon, and Meta listed among the sponsors, per the outlet.

The White House said that the money raised would go to the White House Historical Association. The sponsorships ranged from $75,000 to $200,000, according to a CNN report.
