Fact Check: Did eagle attack man in furry costume for defiling veterans’ memorial?
WASHINGTON, DC: Stories celebrating the bald eagle’s bravery are nothing unusual in the United States, where the majestic bird has stood as the nation’s symbol since 1782, representing strength, courage, and freedom.
One such story recently grabbed attention online after an image went viral allegedly showing a bald eagle attacking a man dressed in a furry costume for defiling a veterans’ memorial in Washington, DC.
The dramatic image quickly spread across social media, with many users praising it as a symbol of American patriotism. However, the viral claim also sparked skepticism, with others questioning whether the scene was authentic or digitally fabricated.

American flags, flowers, and handwritten notes were visible around the site, adding to the patriotic tone of the post. In the bottom-right corner, a red-circled inset allegedly showed police body camera footage of officers later arresting the man.

“Man tried defiling a veteran memorial, then an eagle dropped out of the sky before police even got there,” the viral post claimed.
“In Washington, a man dressed in a furry costume was caught on security camera kicking at a veteran memorial and messing with the roses families had left for their loved ones,” the caption further stated.
“But before he could do more damage, an eagle suddenly swooped down and slammed into his back, knocking him into the wall as he started screaming for help,” the post continued.
The same image also circulated widely on YouTube and X, where it reportedly amassed more than 13,000 views.
Fact Check: Viral eagle image was AI-generated
After reviewing the viral image and related reports, it was determined that the claim was false and that the image was most likely generated using AI, according to Snopes.
No credible news organizations reported the alleged incident, despite the dramatic nature of the claim and the supposed existence of security camera footage. If the event had truly taken place in Washington, DC, it likely would have received extensive media coverage.
Instead, the story circulated solely through viral social media posts without any verified evidence supporting it.
A SynthID scan was also conducted to examine the image’s authenticity. While the scan confirmed the image was not created using Google’s AI tools, several visual inconsistencies strongly suggested digital manipulation.
Among the most noticeable issues were distorted and unreadable lettering on the memorial wall, along with mismatched details between the main image and the inset photo, including differences in clothing patterns, flowers, and cards placed around the memorial.
The report also noted that the account that originally shared the image regularly posts AI-generated content and bizarre fictional stories. Previous uploads from the page allegedly included fabricated clips of a pig jumping from a truck onto a moving car and a tornado throwing a goat through a window.
