WASHINGTON, DC: A claim has been making the rounds on social media that Tesla and SpaceX mastermind Elon Musk dropped a mind-blowing $5.7 billion to charity in 2022, setting a world record while he was at it.

The rumor mill went into overdrive after a viral Facebook post made the bold proclamation: "In 2022, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, set a world record for the largest charitable donation by a car company owner, contributing an astounding $5.7 billion to various global causes."

“This massive philanthropic gesture, filed through a US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) disclosure, marked a pivotal moment in tech industry philanthropy, surpassing donations from other billionaires like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. Musk's donation focused on causes such as sustainability, education, and healthcare, aligning with his 'broader commitment to tackling pressing global challenges'," the post continued.

“As a leading tech philanthropist, Musk's generosity underscores his vision of using wealth from electric vehicles and space exploration to create lasting positive change," it concluded.

Another post claimed: “Elon Musk Sets World Record with $5.7 Billion Charitable Donation in 2022.” And similar copy-paste jobs were all over the place—on X, Facebook, Bluesky, and Threads.

Fact Check: Did Elon Musk donate a record $5.7B in charity?

The truth is that Elon Musk did donate roughly $5.7 billion worth of Tesla stock to charity—but it was actually in late 2021 and it wasn't quite the world record donation the internet is making it out to be.

According to a US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing, Musk made the donation between November 19 and 29, 2021—handing over 5 million Tesla shares valued around $5.7 billion at the time.

At the time, Al Jazeera reported that the move was "one of the largest philanthropic donations in history".

The SEC filing didn’t say who received the shares. But according to Bloomberg, it went to the Musk Foundation, which Elon himself controls.

Not a Guinness World Record-worthy moment

Guinness World Records confirmed to Snopes via email that Elon Musk’s donation didn’t break the record for the largest private charitable gift.

That honor still goes to Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates, who donated a staggering $6 billion to their own foundation back in August 1999. Adjusted for inflation, that’s about $10 billion in 2021 dollars.

As for the "largest charitable donation by a car company owner," it’s still unclear whether Elon wins that oddly specific title since there’s no official ruling on that.

Because the donation wasn’t publicly disclosed until 2022, Musk didn’t appear on the 2021 Philanthropy 50 list that ranks the year’s biggest charitable givers.

According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, had it been disclosed earlier, Musk would have landed the no 2 spot right behind Bill and Melinda Gates, who pledged $15 billion that year.

In explaining their methodology, The Chronicle pointed out that “not all philanthropists publicly disclose details about their giving, and they are not legally required to do so.”

Role of artificial intelligence

Multiple Facebook posts pushing this narrative were traced back to shady websites.

These sites posted nearly identical text with headlines like: “Elon Musk’s 2021 $5.7 billion ‘mystery gift’ went to his foundation."

Furthermore, these articles parroted: “Elon Musk donated $5.7 billion in Tesla stock to his foundation in 2021, which was the largest charitable donation ever made by a car company owner at the time.”

But, suspiciously, the language felt robotic and unnaturally smooth.

Sure enough, the AI-detection tool ZeroGPT flagged the text as likely AI-generated.
