WASHINGTON, DC: House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries sharply criticized President Donald Trump and his Republican allies this week.

He argued in a press release that the Trump administration's military action against Iran has led the United States into what he called an 'endless war.'

Jeffries' remarks highlight a larger partisan struggle over war powers and presidential authority.

‘Trump and Republicans promised to lower costs’

While speaking at a press conference, Jeffries claimed that the Trump administration promised to lower costs and bring the economy back on track.

“On the campaign trail, Donald Trump and Republicans promised to lower costs on day one.”

“But failed Republican policies haven't led to costs going down. Costs have gone up, and the Trump tariffs have increased costs on everyday Americans by thousands of dollars per year.”

Speaking to reporters, Jeffries said Trump and the GOP pledged on the campaign trail to lower costs 'on day one,' but argued that Republican economic policies have had the opposite effect.

He specifically criticized the administration’s tariff strategy, contending that it has increased prices for everyday Americans by thousands of dollars per year.

Hakeem Jeffries targets immigration policies

Jeffries also criticized the administration’s immigration enforcement policies. He claimed they are very different from what was promised during the campaign.

Republicans had said they would focus enforcement on violent criminals living in the country illegally.

However, he stated that federal agencies like the Department of Homeland Security and ICE have used taxpayer money in ways he described as abusive and unfair.

“But under Donald Trump, the Department of Homeland Security and ICE are spending taxpayer dollars to brutalize, and in some cases kill, American citizens like Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti.”

Strongest criticism of Trump’s foreign policy

The Democratic leader offered his harshest criticism of Trump’s foreign policy choices.

On the campaign trail, Jeffries stated that Republicans promised to stay clear of "failed, foreign, forever wars."

He argued that Trump has instead involved the United States in a new conflict in the Middle East without getting approval from Congress.

“Donald Trump and Republicans promised not to get the American people into endless, failed, foreign, forever wars.”

“And yet, Donald Trump has just gotten America into an endless war that he acknowledges and plans to be endless, as was the case earlier today.”

Jeffries drew comparisons to past US military engagements in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the Vietnam War, warning that history shows such wars “will not end well.”

He accused Trump and Republican lawmakers of repeatedly misleading the public on both domestic and foreign policy matters, calling their agenda 'a complete and total disaster.'
