Fact Check: Did ex-NATO general say Europeans must fight US if Trump moves on Greenland?
WASHINGTON, DC: After the US captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on January 3, 2026, President Donald Trump highlighted US oversight of Venezuela and revived his long-standing interest in Greenland, the mineral- and energy-rich autonomous Danish territory in the Arctic.
Amid this, a claim surfaced alleging that former NATO general Michel Yakovleff had said Europe should “fight” the United States if Trump moved to seize Greenland.
Claim: Michel Yakovleff said 'If Trump moves on Greenland, Europeans must be ready to fight the US'
The claim circulated widely on social media platforms, including Facebook and X. Posts paired images of Yakovleff in interviews with quotes suggesting he said, “If Trump moves on Greenland, Europeans must be ready to fight the US.”

The claim widely spread on, Facebook and X.
Another post repeated the claim, Ex-NATO Europe General Michel Yakovleff states serious language on Trump's threats, “If Trump moves on Greenland, Europeans must be ready to fight the US to defend sovereignty."

Fact Check: Statement incorrectly attributed, Yakovleff never said those words
The claim is false. Yakovleff never stated that Europe should fight the US over Greenland. While he did discuss Greenland in a French TV interview, he never called for an actual military confrontation.
The interview aired on 'Television Francaise' 1. According to a Snopes fact check, Yakovleff told the outlet that the interviewer did not allow him to fully elaborate on his position. In his email to Snopes, he said, “I may have said something along those lines… But it does not represent my full views, which are a bit more sophisticated than what I started to say before being interrupted.”
Instead of advocating war, Yakovleff suggested a “European symbolic force” to signal strength. He also emphasized that openly antagonizing Trump was not feasible at the time, though he noted the stakes were “absolutely existential to NATO.”
Yakovleff also proposed deploying a small European trigger force to Greenland to send a message, but clarified this was a symbolic act rather than a call to arms
Thus, the widely circulated quote was incorrectly attributed, and Yakovleff never issued a call for Europe to fight the United States.
