Fact Check: Did Iranian officials call for an end to war with United States?
TEHRAN, IRAN: As the war in the Middle East escalates, during which Iran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as their new Supreme Leader, a rumor has been circulating on social media platforms that Iranian officials are now calling to end the war, on the condition that there won't be further attacks from the United States. Let us fact-check the claim.
Claim: Iran is calling for an end to the war
The rumor surfaced on a post on X, which came with a caption stating, “BREAKING - Iranian officials are now calling for an end to the war with the United States if guarantees can be put in place that they will not be attacked again, as reported by Iranian state TV, following the naming of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new supreme leader.”
The post has garnered more than a hundred thousand views, and comments under it suggest many believe it is true, while others question its authenticity.
Fact Check: False, Iran did not call to end the war
There is no evidence that Iranian officials have called for an end to the war. Moreover, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, on March 7, clarified that they will not agree to a ceasefire with the United States and Israel, stating that Tehran will keep fighting unless the war ends permanently.
Speaking to NBC News' 'Meet the Press,' Araghchi said Iran cannot halt military operations while attacks on its territory continue.
“There needs to be a permanent end to the war,” he said. “Unless we get to that, I think we need to continue fighting for the sake of our people and our security.”
A fact check by Grok stated, “No state TV reports or official statements show them publicly "calling for an end to the war with the US if guarantees" right after."
"Recent Iranian comments (FM Araghchi, adviser Kharazi) are defiant: reject ceasefire talks while attacks continue, ready for long war, demand no further aggression first. Earlier indirect intel feelers (pre-naming) weren't public or on state TV. War is ongoing.”
Donald Trump says the war will end soon
President Donald Trump on Tuesday, March 10, said that the Iran war was going to end soon, without providing any specific timeline. He also warned Tehran that if they tried anything cute, the US would end the nation. He called the Iran war a short-term excursion.
"It's going to end soon, and if it starts up again, they'll be hit even harder," Trump told a news conference in Florida. "We took a little excursion because we felt we had to do that to get rid of some people. And I think you'll see it's going to be a short-term excursion," he said.
