WASHINGTON, DC: Viral posts claimed that a public spat erupted between rock musician Jack White and the White House after Jack criticized the Trump administration’s redecorated Oval Office.

In response, the White House Communications Director Steven Cheung shot back with harsh personal attacks. White then issued a forceful counter‑response on Instagram, escalating the feud.

But how much of this story is actually true? Let's find out.

Claim: Jack White responded to White House’s criticism over decor

In November 2025, a Facebook post claimed to report an incident that had appeared on various social media platforms three months earlier.

The post went viral, stating that Jack, formerly of 'The White Stripes' group and known for 'Seven Nation Army', had responded after the White House criticized his comments on the Oval Office decor.

The post, featuring an image of Jack White holding a guitar, read, "Jack White is a washed-up, has-been loser posting drivel on social media because he clearly has ample time on his hands due to his stalled career, claimed White House spokesman Steven Cheung."

It also said, "It’s apparent [White]’s been masquerading as a real artist, because he fails to appreciate, and quite frankly disrespects, the splendor and significance of the Oval Office inside of ‘The People’s House,’” Cheung added.

According to the posts, White described the administration as "petty and pathetic and thin-skinned" and joked that the remark about him masquerading as a real artist would serve as his tombstone inscription.

Similar claims appeared on various social media platforms three months earlier, with one Instagram account posting the same message "Steven Cheung responded to Jack White's critique of Donald Trump's gold decor."

Another post on Reddit claimed to share Jack’s response.

Fact Check: Jack White did criticize Donald Trump's White House decor

The claim was true, and the direct quotes attributed to both Jack and Cheung were accurate. The back-and-forth between them occurred in August 2025, a few months before the Facebook posts about the exchange.

The exchange began on August 18, 2025, when Jack posted a photo on Instagram showing Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy speaking in the Oval Office, which, by that time, Trump had decorated with gold.

"Look at how disgusting trump has transformed the historic White House," White wrote in the post. "It's now a vulgar, gold leafed and gaudy, professional wrestler's dressing room."

In the following days, The Daily Beast and The Hill contacted the White House for comment. Cheung provided the following statement to both outlets: "Jack White is a washed up, has-been loser posting drivel on social media....masquerading as a real artist, because he fails to appreciate, and quite frankly disrespects, the splendor and significance of the Oval Office inside of 'The People's House.'"

On August 20, Jack replied to Cheung's statement with a post on Instagram. The post began with an image of Trump holding up a pair of golden sneakers, followed by two images of White’s written response. The remaining images in the post were either of or related to Trump.

The Facebook posts accurately reflected both Jack's response and Cheung’s statement.
