WASHINGTON, DC: Is John Thune turning against Donald Trump? A viral post circulating in April 2026 claims that the Senate Majority Leader has been secretly coordinating with Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer and other Democrats to block Trump’s second-term agenda. The post further alleges that these supposed meetings were aimed at preserving the filibuster, undermining tariff policies, and sabotaging efforts related to Iran, while also hinting at financial ties to China.

Claim: John Thune meeting with Chuck Schumer to block Trump’s agenda

According to a post shared on X by user JoshHall2024, a so-called 'breaking news' claim alleged that John Thune had been secretly meeting with Chuck Schumer.

The post claimed, "GOP Senate Majority Leader RINO John Thune has been SECRETLY MEETING with Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats, plotting ways to obstruct and block the agenda of President Trump, including keeping the filibuster in place, undermining his tariffs and attempting to SABOTAGE his administration's war effort in Iran."

It further alleged that these “secret late-night meetings” had been taking place since the beginning of Trump’s second term.

The post also accused Thune of being part of a broader effort to wrest control of the Republican Party from Trump and the MAGA movement, and claimed he had financial ties to China. It concluded by calling for his removal as majority leader. As the post gained traction and surpassed 65,000 views, many users in the comments section began questioning its authenticity.

Fact Check: False, John Thune is not turning against Trump

The claim that John Thune is secretly meeting Chuck Schumer to block Donald Trump’s second-term agenda is false. Searches for terms such as 'John Thune meets Chuck Schumer' and 'John Thune’s efforts to block Trump’s agenda' found no credible evidence supporting the claim.

Notably, several previous posts from the same X user, JoshHall2024, have already been debunked by fact-checking outlets. This particular post also fails to cite any official or verifiable sources, and no credible commentators have supported the allegation.

The claim appears to be a highly exaggerated and conspiratorial interpretation of routine Senate activity, with no evidence to support assertions of 'secret late-night meetings,' a so-called 'RINO coup,' alleged sabotage of efforts related to Iran, or claims that Thune has financial ties to China.

In reality, Thune and Schumer regularly engage in negotiations over essential legislation, including government funding bills, Department of Homeland Security appropriations, and nominations.

Such interactions are a normal part of bipartisan governance in a closely divided Senate, not evidence of covert coordination. Public reporting instead highlights policy disagreements, floor debates, and stalled negotiations. Therefore, the claim about Thune is false.
